Jesus And His Angels

This will be a fascinating look into the roles Angels have played in the declaration, life, ministry, death, and return of Jesus. It will also include a very interesting verse about the angels of God and Jesus, and how it relates to you at the end. It will not include the Angels from the book of Revelation, as that would have to be another entirely different study. So, let’s start and declare our terms when we use the word “Angel” in the Bible. We will show that it is a Title, not a description. Unfortunately, when you say the word Angel, everyone has the idea of winged beings that look like humans, which is not exactly correct as not all Angels present themselves with wings, nor have them. This is not the focus of our study, but what lends to our study, which is again the word Angel, being a Title not a description.

JESUANGELYOU-Part1

Angel

Here is an example where I believe the word Angel was mistranslated. As it should say “To the Pastor/Messenger of the assembly”:

Revelation 2:1 “To the angel of the assembly in Ephesus write: “He who holds the seven stars in his right hand, he who walks among the seven golden lamp stands says these things:

Here Is Another Example:

1 Corinthians 11:10+13 “For this reason the woman ought to have authority on her head because of the angels. + (13)  Judge among yourselves: is it right that a woman pray to God unveiled?”

This point will become more important later in our study. Just know that the word Angel is a title, not a description. That you must look close to see if it is implying heavenly winged messengers, Spirit from God, earthly messenger, Pastors, or the like. And do remember that Angels can be Heavenly Beings Sent by God, and still look like regular people.

Hebrews 13:2 “Do not be forgetful of hospitality, for by this some have entertained angels without knowing it.”

The A Fearful And Amazing Man

Daniel 10:4-21 “In the twenty-fourth day of the first month, as I was by the side of the great river, which is Hiddekel,  (5)  I lifted up my eyes, and looked, and behold, there was a man clothed in linen, whose thighs were adorned with pure gold of Uphaz.  (6)  His body also was like the beryl, and his face as the appearance of lightning, and his eyes as flaming torches. His arms and his feet were like burnished brass. The voice of his words was like the voice of a multitude.  (7)  I, Daniel, alone saw the vision; for the men who were with me didn’t see the vision; but a great quaking fell on them, and they fled to hide themselves.  (8)  So I was left alone, and saw this great vision. No strength remained in me; for my face grew deathly pale, and I retained no strength.  (9)  Yet I heard the voice of his words. When I heard the voice of his words, then I fell into a deep sleep on my face, with my face toward the ground.  (10)  Behold, a hand touched me, which set me on my knees and on the palms of my hands.  (11)  He said to me, Daniel, you greatly beloved man, understand the words that I speak to you, and stand upright; for I have been sent to you, now. When he had spoken this word to me, I stood trembling.  (12)  Then he said to me, “Don’t be afraid, Daniel; for from the first day that you set your heart to understand, and to humble yourself before your God, your words were heard. I have come for your words’ sake.  (13)  But the prince of the kingdom of Persia withstood me twenty-one days; but, behold, Michael, one of the chief princes, came to help me because I remained there with the kings of Persia.  (14)  Now I have come to make you understand what will happen to your people in the latter days; for the vision is yet for many days.”  (15)  When he had spoken these words to me, I set my face toward the ground, and was mute.  (16)  Behold, one in the likeness of the sons of men touched my lips. Then I opened my mouth, and spoke and said to him who stood before me, “My lord, by reason of the vision my sorrows have overtaken me, and I retain no strength.  (17)  For how can the servant of this my lord talk with this my lord? For as for me, immediately there remained no strength in me. There was no breath left in me.”  (18)  Then one like the appearance of a man touched me again, and he strengthened me.  (19)  He said, “Greatly beloved man, don’t be afraid. Peace be to you. Be strong. Yes, be strong.” When he spoke to me, I was strengthened, and said, “Let my lord speak; for you have strengthened me.”  (20)  Then he said, “Do you know why I have come to you? Now I will return to fight with the prince of Persia. When I go out, behold, the prince of Greece will come.  (21)  But I will tell you that which is inscribed in the writing of truth. There is no one who holds with me against these, but Michael your prince.”

The Prophecy Of Jesus’ Return

Daniel 12:1-3 “At that time Michael will stand up, the great prince who stands for the children of your people; and there will be a time of trouble, such as never was since there was a nation even to that same time. At that time your people will be delivered, everyone who is found written in the book.  (2)  Many of those who sleep in the dust of the earth will awake, some to everlasting life, and some to shame and everlasting contempt.  (3)  Those who are wise will shine as the brightness of the expanse. Those who turn many to righteousness will shine as the stars forever and ever.”

Prophecy Of The Ministry Of Jesus

We find that the Angel Gabriel plays a very important and present role in the life of Jesus. Some events can be clearly pointed as Gabriel, some have to be gleaned. Either way, it is obvious the Gabriel was tasked by God to care for and proclaim the life of Jesus.

Daniel 9:20-27 “While I was speaking, and praying, and confessing my sin and the sin of my people Israel, and presenting my supplication before Yahweh my God for the holy mountain of my God;  (21)  yes, while I was speaking in prayer, the man Gabriel, whom I had seen in the vision at the beginning, being caused to fly swiftly, touched me about the time of the evening offering.  (22)  He instructed me, and talked with me, and said, Daniel, “I have now come to give you wisdom and understanding.  (23)  At the beginning of your petitions the commandment went out, and I have come to tell you; for you are greatly beloved. Therefore consider the matter, and understand the vision.  (24)  “Seventy weeks are decreed on your people and on your holy city, to finish disobedience, and to make an end of sins, and to make reconciliation for iniquity, and to bring in everlasting righteousness, and to seal up vision and prophecy, and to anoint the most holy.  (25)  “Know therefore and discern that from the going out of the commandment to restore and to build Jerusalem to the Anointed One, the prince, will be seven weeks and sixty-two weeks. It will be built again, with street and moat, even in troubled times.  (26)  After the sixty-two weeks the Anointed One will be cut off, and will have nothing. The people of the prince who come will destroy the city and the sanctuary. Its end will be with a flood, and war will be even to the end. Desolations are determined.  (27)  He will make a firm covenant with many for one week. In the middle of the week he will cause the sacrifice and the offering to cease. On the wing of abominations will come one who makes desolate; and even to the full end, and that determined, wrath will be poured out on the desolate.”

John: The Herald Of The Messiah

Luke 1:5-19 “There was in the days of Herod, the king of Judea, a certain priest named Zacharias, of the priestly division of Abijah. He had a wife of the daughters of Aaron, and her name was Elizabeth.  (6)  They were both righteous before God, walking blamelessly in all the commandments and ordinances of the Lord.  (7)  But they had no child, because Elizabeth was barren, and they both were well advanced in years.  (8)  Now while he executed the priest’s office before God in the order of his division,  (9)  according to the custom of the priest’s office, his lot was to enter into the temple of the Lord and burn incense.  (10)  The whole multitude of the people were praying outside at the hour of incense.  (11)  An angel of the Lord appeared to him, standing on the right side of the altar of incense.  (12)  Zacharias was troubled when he saw him, and fear fell upon him.  (13)  But the angel said to him, “Don’t be afraid, Zacharias, because your request has been heard, and your wife, Elizabeth, will bear you a son, and you shall call his name John.  (14)  You will have joy and gladness; and many will rejoice at his birth.  (15)  For he will be great in the sight of the Lord, and he will drink no wine nor strong drink. He will be filled with the Holy Spirit, even from his mother’s womb.  (16)  He will turn many of the children of Israel to the Lord, their God.  (17)  He will go before him in the spirit and power of Elijah, ‘to turn the hearts of the fathers to the children,’ and the disobedient to the wisdom of the just; to prepare a people prepared for the Lord.”  (18)  Zacharias said to the angel, “How can I be sure of this? For I am an old man, and my wife is well advanced in years.”  (19)  The angel answered him, “I am Gabriel, who stands in the presence of God. I was sent to speak to you, and to bring you this good news.”

Mary: Mother Of Jesus

Luke 1:26-38  “Now in the sixth month, the angel Gabriel was sent from God to a city of Galilee, named Nazareth,  (27)  to a virgin pledged to be married to a man whose name was Joseph, of David’s house. The virgin’s name was Mary.  (28)  Having come in, the angel said to her, “Rejoice, you highly favored one! The Lord is with you. Blessed are you among women!”  (29)  But when she saw him, she was greatly troubled at the saying, and considered what kind of salutation this might be.  (30)  The angel said to her, “Don’t be afraid, Mary, for you have found favor with God.  (31)  Behold, you will conceive in your womb, and give birth to a son, and will call his name ‘Jesus.’  (32)  He will be great, and will be called the Son of the Most High. The Lord God will give him the throne of his father, David,  (33)  and he will reign over the house of Jacob forever. There will be no end to his Kingdom.”  (34)  Mary said to the angel, “How can this be, seeing I am a virgin?”  (35)  The angel answered her, “The Holy Spirit will come on you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you. Therefore also the holy one who is born from you will be called the Son of God.  (36)  Behold, Elizabeth, your relative, also has conceived a son in her old age; and this is the sixth month with her who was called barren.  (37)  For nothing spoken by God is impossible.”  (38)  Mary said, “Behold, the servant of the Lord; let it be done to me according to your word.” The angel departed from her.”

Luke 2:21 “When eight days were fulfilled for the circumcision of the child, his name was called Jesus, which was given by the angel before he was conceived in the womb.”

Going forth, we can only wonder how many times it was Gabriel that interacted in the life of Jesus. For example: the garden, opening the garden tomb, etc.

Joseph: Earthly Dad

Matthew 1:18-25 “Now the birth of Jesus Christ was like this: After his mother, Mary, was engaged to Joseph, before they came together, she was found pregnant by the Holy Spirit.  (19)  Joseph, her husband, being a righteous man, and not willing to make her a public example, intended to put her away secretly.  (20)  But when he thought about these things, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream, saying, “Joseph, son of David, don’t be afraid to take to yourself Mary, your wife, for that which is conceived in her is of the Holy Spirit.  (21)  She shall give birth to a son. You shall call his name Jesus, for it is he who shall save his people from their sins.”  (22)  Now all this has happened, that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the Lord through the prophet, saying,  (23)  “Behold, the virgin shall be with child, and shall give birth to a son. They shall call his name Immanuel;” which is, being interpreted, “God with us.”  (24)  Joseph arose from his sleep, and did as the angel of the Lord commanded him, and took his wife to himself;  (25)  and didn’t know her sexually until she had given birth to her firstborn son. He named him Jesus.”

Shepherds

Luke 2:8-18 “There were shepherds in the same country staying in the field, and keeping watch by night over their flock.  (9)  Behold, an angel of the Lord stood by them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified.  (10)  The angel said to them, “Don’t be afraid, for behold, I bring you good news of great joy which will be to all the people.  (11)  For there is born to you today, in David’s city, a Savior, who is Christ the Lord.  (12)  This is the sign to you: you will find a baby wrapped in strips of cloth, lying in a feeding trough.”  (13)  Suddenly, there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly army praising God, and saying,  (14)  “Glory to God in the highest, on earth peace, good will toward men.”  (15)  When the angels went away from them into the sky, the shepherds said to one another, “Let’s go to Bethlehem, now, and see this thing that has happened, which the Lord has made known to us.”  (16)  They came with haste, and found both Mary and Joseph, and the baby was lying in the feeding trough.  (17)  When they saw it, they publicized widely the saying which was spoken to them about this child.  (18)  All who heard it wondered at the things which were spoken to them by the shepherds.”

Wise Men Following The Star

Revelation 1:20 “the mystery of the seven stars which you saw in my right hand, and the seven golden lamp stands. The seven stars are the angels of the seven assemblies. The seven lamp stands are seven assemblies.”

Matthew 2:1-11  “Now when Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea in the days of King Herod, behold, wise men from the east came to Jerusalem, saying,  (2)  “Where is he who is born King of the Jews? For we saw his star in the east, and have come to worship him.”  (3)  When King Herod heard it, he was troubled, and all Jerusalem with him.  (4)  Gathering together all the chief priests and scribes of the people, he asked them where the Christ would be born.  (5)  They said to him, “In Bethlehem of Judea, for this is written through the prophet,  (6)  ‘You Bethlehem, land of Judah, are in no way least among the princes of Judah: for out of you shall come a governor, who shall shepherd my people, Israel.’”  (7)  Then Herod secretly called the wise men, and learned from them exactly what time the star appeared.  (8)  He sent them to Bethlehem, and said, “Go and search diligently for the young child. When you have found him, bring me word, so that I also may come and worship him.”  (9)  They, having heard the king, went their way; and behold, the star, which they saw in the east, went before them, until it came and stood over where the young child was.  (10)  When they saw the star, they rejoiced with exceedingly great joy.  (11)  They came into the house and saw the young child with Mary, his mother, and they fell down and worshiped him. Opening their treasures, they offered to him gifts: gold, frankincense, and myrrh.”

Wise Men Warned In A Dream (Angel?)

Matthew 2:12 “Being warned in a dream not to return to Herod, they went back to their own country another way.”

Like in Matthew 1:20 where an Angel warned Joseph in a dream, it does seem to track with most examples. But it does not expressly say it was an Angel.

Joseph: Escape To Egypt

Matthew 2:13-15  “Now when they had departed, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream, saying, “Arise and take the young child and his mother, and flee into Egypt, and stay there until I tell you, for Herod will seek the young child to destroy him.”  (14)  He arose and took the young child and his mother by night, and departed into Egypt,  (15)  and was there until the death of Herod; that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the Lord through the prophet, saying, “Out of Egypt I called my son.”

Joseph: The Return Home

Matthew 2:19-23  “But when Herod was dead, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared in a dream to Joseph in Egypt, saying,  (20)  “Arise and take the young child and his mother, and go into the land of Israel, for those who sought the young child’s life are dead.”  (21)  He arose and took the young child and his mother, and came into the land of Israel.  (22)  But when he heard that Archelaus was reigning over Judea in the place of his father, Herod, he was afraid to go there. Being warned in a dream, he withdrew into the region of Galilee,  (23)  and came and lived in a city called Nazareth; that it might be fulfilled which was spoken through the prophets: “He will be called a Nazarene.”

Baptism Of Jesus {GOD}

Matthew 3:13-17 “Then Jesus came from Galilee to the Jordan to John, to be baptized by him.  (14)  But John would have hindered him, saying, “I need to be baptized by you, and you come to me?”  (15)  But Jesus, answering, said to him, “Allow it now, for this is the fitting way for us to fulfill all righteousness.” Then he allowed him.  (16)  Jesus, when he was baptized, went up directly from the water: and behold, the heavens were opened to him. He saw the Spirit of God descending as a dove, and coming on him.  (17)  Behold, a voice out of the heavens said, “This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased.”

Temptation By Satan/Angels Help

Luke 4:1-13  “Jesus, full of the Holy Spirit, returned from the Jordan, and was led by the Spirit into the wilderness  (2)  for forty days, being tempted by the devil. He ate nothing in those days. Afterward, when they were completed, he was hungry.  (3)  The devil said to him, “If you are the Son of God, command this stone to become bread.”  (4)  Jesus answered him, saying, “It is written, ‘Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word of God.’”  (5)  The devil, leading him up on a high mountain, showed him all the kingdoms of the world in a moment of time.  (6)  The devil said to him, “I will give you all this authority, and their glory, for it has been delivered to me; and I give it to whomever I want.  (7)  If you therefore will worship before me, it will all be yours.”  (8)  Jesus answered him, “Get behind me Satan! For it is written, ‘You shall worship the Lord your God, and you shall serve him only.’”  (9)  He led him to Jerusalem, and set him on the pinnacle of the temple, and said to him, “If you are the Son of God, cast yourself down from here,  (10)  for it is written, ‘He will put his angels in charge of you, to guard you;’  (11)  and, ‘On their hands they will bear you up, lest perhaps you dash your foot against a stone.’”  (12)  Jesus answering, said to him, “It has been said, ‘You shall not tempt the Lord your God.’”  (13)  When the devil had completed every temptation, he departed from him until another time.”

Matthew 4:11 “Then the devil left him, and behold, angels came and served him.”

Voice From Heaven End Of His Ministry

John 12:20-33 “Now there were certain Greeks among those that went up to worship at the feast.  (21)  These, therefore, came to Philip, who was from Bethsaida of Galilee, and asked him, saying, “Sir, we want to see Jesus.”  (22)  Philip came and told Andrew, and in turn, Andrew came with Philip, and they told Jesus.  (23)  Jesus answered them, “The time has come for the Son of Man to be glorified.  (24)  Most certainly I tell you, unless a grain of wheat falls into the earth and dies, it remains by itself alone. But if it dies, it bears much fruit.  (25)  He who loves his life will lose it. He who hates his life in this world will keep it to eternal life.  (26)  If anyone serves me, let him follow me. Where I am, there will my servant also be. If anyone serves me, the Father will honor him.  (27)  “Now my soul is troubled. What shall I say? ‘Father, save me from this time?’ But for this cause I came to this time.  (28)  Father, glorify your name!” Then a voice came out of the sky, saying, “I have both glorified it, and will glorify it again.”  (29)  The multitude therefore, who stood by and heard it, said that it had thundered. Others said, “An angel has spoken to him.”  (30)  Jesus answered, “This voice hasn’t come for my sake, but for your sakes.  (31)  Now is the judgment of this world. Now the prince of this world will be cast out.  (32)  And I, if I am lifted up from the earth, will draw all people to myself.”  (33)  But he said this, signifying by what kind of death he should die.”

Satan Left For A Time, But Came To Tempt Jesus Again

John 14:28-31 “You heard how I told you, ‘I go away, and I come to you.’ If you loved me, you would have rejoiced, because I said ‘I am going to my Father;’ for the Father is greater than I.  (29)  Now I have told you before it happens so that when it happens, you may believe.  (30)  I will no more speak much with you, for the prince of the world comes, and he has nothing in me.  (31)  But that the world may know that I love the Father, and as the Father commanded me, even so I do. Arise, let’s go from here.”

Angel Before The Crucifixion [Gabriel?]

Luke 22:39-46 “He came out, and went, as his custom was, to the Mount of Olives. His disciples also followed him.  (40)  When he was at the place, he said to them, “Pray that you don’t enter into temptation.”  (41)  He was withdrawn from them about a stone’s throw, and he knelt down and prayed,  (42)  saying, “Father, if you are willing, remove this cup from me. Nevertheless, not my will, but yours, be done.”  (43)  An angel from heaven appeared to him, strengthening him.  (44)  Being in agony he prayed more earnestly. His sweat became like great drops of blood falling down on the ground.  (45)  When he rose up from his prayer, he came to the disciples, and found them sleeping because of grief,  (46)  and said to them, “Why do you sleep? Rise and pray that you may not enter into temptation.”

I believe, if not also in other places leading up to the garden, Satan returned to tempt Jesus again in the garden. As we read before in John 14:28-31, Satan left for a time but came again to Jesus.

From John Chapters 12-21 are the closing events of Jesus’ Earthly Ministry. It is a very thorough account of what Jesus said and did.

The Resurrection [Gabriel?]

Matthew 28:1-7  “Now after the Sabbath, as it began to dawn on the first day of the week, Mary Magdalene and the other Mary came to see the tomb.  (2)  Behold, there was a great earthquake, for an angel of the Lord descended from the sky, and came and rolled away the stone from the door, and sat on it.  (3)  His appearance was like lightning, and his clothing white as snow.  (4)  For fear of him, the guards shook, and became like dead men.  (5)  The angel answered the women, “Don’t be afraid, for I know that you seek Jesus, who has been crucified.  (6)  He is not here, for he has risen, just like he said. Come, see the place where the Lord was lying.  (7)  Go quickly and tell his disciples, ‘He has risen from the dead, and behold, he goes before you into Galilee; there you will see him.’ Behold, I have told you.”

As we end Part 1 of our study, what we find in all this is that God went through extreme measures and great care to support Jesus in His mission. We can clearly see that Gabriel played a major roll, one that may be more extensive than we might imagine. Yet, since not every occurrence gives us the name of the Angel, we are left to wonder. We also know and need to remember that the word Angel is a Title, Not A Description.

In our next study, we will go over what part Peter, James, John, Moses, and Elijah have in the events. How it relates to Angels/ Pastors/ Prophets/ Messengers. We will see if we can glean from scripture what appears to be a hidden participation with the Angels of Jesus. We will also cover how all this adds up to one grand event concerning all the children of God. This event precedes the return of Jesus. A most interesting event that relates to all the events we have been studying.
