Where Do Demons Reside

Focus Verse: “There is a natural body, and there is a spiritual body.” 1 Corinthians 15:44 In understanding our makeup, demon possession, and Hell, it would be helpful to understand what makes us a living being. And how all the parts are connected. In our last study, “Face Your Demons”, we went over how Christians can be influenced, oppressed, and possessed by demons. By showing how we literally wrestle against principalities of darkness as children of light. We exposed this to help people realize the battle and escape Babylon. Now we will cover how and where demons reside with a human being.

Where Do Demons Reside

How many bodies make up a human? 2 –

The Natural and the Spiritual body.

1 Corinthians 15:44 “It is sown a natural body, it is raised a spiritual body. There is a natural body, and there is a spiritual body.”

Where Do Demons Reside

How many pieces of a human are there? 3 –

The Spirit, Soul, and the Body.

1 Thessalonians 5:23 “And may the God of peace Himself sanctify you, and may your whole spirit and soul and body be preserved blamelessly at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.”

Where Do Demons Reside

How are they all related?

The Body houses the Soul, and the Soul houses the Spirit.

Hebrews 4:12 “For the Word of God is living and powerful and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the dividing apart of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.”

Where Do Demons Reside

Q) Don’t some churches teach that the Spirit and the Body make up the Soul?

A) Yes, and they get that from the following verse:

Genesis 2:7 “Yahweh God formed man from the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul.”

Yet, just like we read above in 1 Thessalonians 5:23, think of it like this: “God formed man out of the dust of the ground”- this is the mortal body. “And breathed into his nostril the breath of life”- this is the spirit. “And man became a living soul” -this is the spiritual body.

Where Do Demons Reside

Do you have any more proof to back this up?

Yes. Jesus said:

Matthew 10:28. “Don’t fear those who can kill the body, fear him “God” who is able to destroy the body and soul in hell.”

So, the body and soul are destroyed in hell. If the spirit and body made the soul, wouldn’t you just say to kill the soul in hell? Yet, we know that the spirit God breathes goes back to God from where it came when we die.

Ecclesiastes 12:7 “Then the dust shall return to the earth as it was, and the spirit shall return to God who gave it.”

It is impossible for it to be true that the spirit and body make a soul- we are a creation folded three times.

Are all three- spirit, body, and soul, thrown into hell?

Yes, the Bible says:

James 2:26 “the body without the spirit is dead.”

People are cast alive into Hell, though you should note that the spirit is not destroyed. The person is made to live again for their judgment and punishment. After “their Body and Soul are destroyed, the spirit goes back to God who gave it.” Ecclesiastes 12:7

Where Do Demons Reside

As we see the flesh is consumed away, the soul dies, and the spirit goes back to God.

Ezekiel 18:4 “Behold, all souls are Mine. As the soul of the father, also the soul of the son, they are Mine. The soul that sins, it shall die.”

Romans 6:23 “For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.”

Revelation 2:11 “He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the assemblies. He who overcomes won’t be harmed by the second death.”

Revelation 20:5-6 “The rest of the dead didn’t live until the thousand years were finished. This is the first resurrection.  (6)  Blessed and holy is he who has part in the first resurrection. Over these, the second death has no power, but they will be priests of God and of Christ, and will reign with him one thousand years.”

What about sin?

Where Do Demons Reside

The Bible says:

Romans 6:12 “Don’t let sin reign in your mortal bodies.”

This means that we sin in the physical body “flesh”, inflicting the soul (Spiritual Body), yet not in “The Renewed Spirit”. This helps to understand Paul when he says “that which I want to do, ‘the spirit’ I don’t do. And that which I don’t want to do, ‘the flesh’ I do it. So it’s no longer me, ‘the spirit’ but the sin that dwells within me ‘the flesh’”. Romans 7:14-20

  • See also that Paul says “the law is Holy, Just and Good.” Romans 7:12
  • Yet, here is the kicker- the “law is spiritual.” Romans 7:14
  • “For the flesh lusts against the Spirit.” Galatians 5:17
  • The flesh is at war with the spirit and the Law of God, and it also “wars against the soul.”   1 Peter 2:11

We also know that the heart of a man can sin, inflicting the soul of man.

Matthew 5:27-28  “You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall not commit adultery;’  (28)  but I tell you that everyone who gazes at a woman to lust after her has committed adultery with her already in his heart.”

As we read, the Soul that sins will die so we must keep our spiritual man clean.

Ezekiel 18:4 “Behold, all souls are mine; as the soul of the father, so also the soul of the son is mine. The soul who sins, he shall die.”

Note: We can do this through repentance, baptism, foot washing, and the Lord’s Supper.

This helps us to understand Romans 3:20 “Therefore by the deed of the law (the doing through the flesh) shall no flesh be justified in his sight.” Our flesh is incapable to do that which is spiritual on its own because it’s carnal “sinful.” Our Renewed Spirit must use the spiritual Body to overcome the mortal flesh through the spirit of the mind, practicing the Spiritual gift of self control.

So, what makes it to heaven?

Let’s start with what does not inherit the kingdom of God:

1 Corinthians 15:50 “Flesh and blood cannot inherit the kingdom of God.”

1 Corinthians 15:47 “The first man “Adam representing the physical body” is of the earth, earthy: The second man is the Lord “Jesus representing the spiritual man” is from heaven.” The first man was out of earth, earthy; the second Man was the Lord from Heaven.   (*Words In Blue Are Added By Me!)

This is also why the Bible says we must:

John 4:23 “worship God in spirit and in truth.”

Philippians 3:3. “Worship God in the spirit… have no confidence in the flesh”

The spiritual man inherits the kingdom of God:

Philippians 3:20-21 “But our citizenship is in heaven – and we also eagerly await a savior from there, the Lord Jesus Christ,  (21)  who will transform these humble bodies of ours into the likeness of his glorious body by means of that power by which he is able to subject all things to himself.”

So, it is not our flesh, 1 Corinthians 15:50 as stated above. But The Spiritual Man, newly formed, that Inherits Heaven.

This is why we must be changed completely, receiving a new heavenly body to house our fully renewed spirit.

1 Corinthians 15:51-55 “Listen, I will tell you a mystery: We will not all sleep, but we will all be changed –  (52)  in a moment, in the blinking of an eye, at the last trumpet. For the trumpet will sound, and the dead will be raised imperishable, and we will be changed.  (53)  For this perishable body must put on the imperishable, and this mortal body must put on immortality.  (54)  Now when this perishable puts on the imperishable, and this mortal puts on immortality, then the saying that is written will happen, “Death has been swallowed up in victory.”  (55)  “Where, O death, is your victory? Where, O death, is your sting?”

Philippians 3:21 “Who shall change our vile body, that it may be fashioned like unto his glorious body, according to the working whereby he is able even to subdue all things unto himself.”

Where Do Demons Reside

What is the purpose of our bodies?

Ephesians 2:22 “in whom you also are being built together into a dwelling place of God in the Spirit.”

We live in a physical world, yet we are spiritual beings. This should help you understand why demons want to possess the body. We have physical bodies to operate in a physical world. They do not, and they want one real bad. So, they want to use yours. But this must not be so. We are built for God to reside within us.

1 Corinthians 3:16-17 “Do you not know that you are a temple of God, and that the Spirit of God dwells in you?   If anyone defiles the temple of God, God shall destroy him. For the temple of God is holy, which you are.”

Your Body and Soul are meant to provide transportation and habitation for the Spirit of God to interact in a physical world through you. Accomplishing His will and desires as He finishes up the God-given directions given to Adam and Eve to tend the Garden. Now as the 2nd Adam (Jesus) completes this mission, we now tend the world for His glory- Fulfilling the command given to Adam to tend the garden.

When we become a Christian, do we exchange our spirit for the Holy Spirit?

No, it’s more like a marriage: the two spirits become one like man and wife.

  • “The Spirit Himself bears witness with our spirit that we are the children of God.”

Romans 8:16

  • “Do you not know that your bodies are the members of Christ? Shall I then take the members of Christ and make them the members of a harlot? Let it not be! Or do you not know that he being joined to a harlot is one body? For He says, the two shall be one flesh. But he being joined to the Lord is one spirit.” 1 Corinthians 6:15-17

This union is what provides your assurance of salvation through faith in the one you are married to. Becoming one in Spirit with Jesus is the anchor of Your Soul.

Hebrews 6:18-20  â€œThat by two immutable things, in which it is impossible for God to lie, we may have a strong encouragement, who have fled for refuge to take hold of the hope set before us.  (19)  This hope we have as an anchor of the soul, a hope both sure and steadfast and entering into that which is within the veil;  (20)  where as a forerunner Jesus entered for us, having become a high priest forever after the order of Melchizedek..”

As Jesus enters, you enter, and the Holy Spirit of God enters into you.

Where is the spirit located, that God breathes into us?

We know that the soul resides in the body, and the spirit in the soul. I also believe that the spirit resides in the mind as we read here:

Ephesians 4:23 “be renewed in the spirit of your mind.”

I believe that this is the connection between the natural and spiritual man. Yet, I believe it is further alluded to in the following verses:

Romans 8:26-27 “In the same way, the Spirit also helps our weaknesses, for we don’t know how to pray as we ought. But the Spirit himself makes intercession for us with groanings which can’t be uttered.  (27)  He who searches the hearts knows what is on the Spirit’s mind, because he makes intercession for the saints according to God.”

1 Corinthians 14:14-15 “For if I pray in another language, my spirit prays, but my understanding is unfruitful.  (15)  What is it then? I will pray with the spirit, and I will pray with the understanding also. I will sing with the spirit, and I will sing with the understanding also.”

2 Timothy 1:7 “For God has not given us the spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind.”

It is the spiritual man/mind that must override the physical man/mind to produce self control.

Our bodies have our brain. Our spiritual bodies (soul) have our spirit, “its brain”. I believe that the two minds: “brain and spirit”, are connected. We often hear of our “subconscious mind”, which I believe is our spirit, not another dimension to our brain.

Romans 12:2 “And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, in order to prove by you what is that good and pleasing and perfect will of God.”

Romans 8:6 “For the mind of the flesh is death, but the mind of the Spirit is life and peace;”

It is the Spirit of man in concert with the Holy Spirit that produce the renewal of the mind, controlling the physical brain to execute God’s will in the flesh.

Where Do Demons Reside

When people become inhabited or possessed by a demon, where does the demon reside?

I believe that a Christian can be possessed. I believe that Jesus thinks the flesh is ultimately useless:

1 Corinthians 15:50 “Flesh and blood cannot inherit the kingdom of God, nor does corruption inherit incorruption.”

That’s why He changes our flesh:

Philippians 3:21 “Who shall change our vile body, that it may be fashioned like unto his glorious body, according to the working whereby he is able even to subdue all things unto himself.”

I believe that we worship God in the spirit:

Philippians 3:3 “For we are the circumcision, which worship God in the spirit, and rejoice in Christ Jesus, and have no confidence in the flesh.”

Which means our Spirit overrides the flesh to create expressions of worship, making the flesh a slave to the spiritual man- not a slave to sin. Or, to say it another way, when you are given into sin, you are enslaving your spiritual man to the mortal flesh of sin.

I also believe that the Holy Spirit is married to our spirit, which resides in the soul of man. I believe that the Holy Spirit and demons cannot reside in the same place at the same time. So, all this leads me to the conclusion that our spiritual man is inhabited by the Spirit of God. And sometimes some individuals are inhabited by demons in the carnal/mortal body. The Holy Spirit controls our spirit to direct us. Demons take control of our brain to control us. This is why Demonized people can’t control themselves; the demon is breaking or interrupting the connection of mind and spirit, separating the physical control off the spiritual man over the physical body.

Where Do Demons Reside

~ Review ~

  • The Body houses the Soul and the Soul houses the Spirit, The Spirit and Mind interlink to make a complete whole.
  • The Holy Spirit of God resides within your Soul communing with your Spirit.
  • Together they can overcome the flesh and sin nature.
  • Letting sin reign in your mortal body inflicts your Spiritual Body (The Soul) with sin.
  • The Soul that sins will die. Since the soul is the temple of God, if defiled by sin through the flesh and the mind, God will destroy this temple as profane. Removing His Holy Spirit (if needed) and the Spirit of Life from that person, thereby destroying their very being.
  • This process is completed as the Body and Soul are destroyed in Hell.
  • Then the “Breathe of Life/Spirit” goes back to God who gave it.

Side note: No one burns in Hell Forever!

Now, with all this information in mind, let’s read the following:

Romans 8:1-17 “There is therefore now no condemnation to those who are in Christ Jesus, who don’t walk according to the flesh, but according to the Spirit.  (2)  For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus made me free from the law of sin and of death.  (3)  For what the law couldn’t do, in that it was weak through the flesh, God did, sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh and for sin, he condemned sin in the flesh;  (4)  that the ordinance of the law might be fulfilled in us, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit.  (5)  For those who live according to the flesh set their minds on the things of the flesh, but those who live according to the Spirit, the things of the Spirit.  (6)  For the mind of the flesh is death, but the mind of the Spirit is life and peace;  (7)  because the mind of the flesh is hostile towards God; for it is not subject to God’s law, neither indeed can it be.  (8)  Those who are in the flesh can’t please God.  (9)  But you are not in the flesh but in the Spirit, if it is so that the Spirit of God dwells in you. But if any man doesn’t have the Spirit of Christ, he is not his.  (10)  If Christ is in you, the body is dead because of sin, but the spirit is alive because of righteousness.  (11)  But if the Spirit of him who raised up Jesus from the dead dwells in you, he who raised up Christ Jesus from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through his Spirit who dwells in you.  (12)  So then, brothers, we are debtors, not to the flesh, to live after the flesh.  (13)  For if you live after the flesh, you must die; but if by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body, you will live.  (14)  For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, these are children of God.  (15)  For you didn’t receive the spirit of bondage again to fear, but you received the Spirit of adoption, by whom we cry, “Abba! Father!”  (16)  The Spirit himself testifies with our spirit that we are children of God;  (17)  and if children, then heirs; heirs of God, and joint heirs with Christ; if indeed we suffer with him, that we may also be glorified with him.”

Bonus: We can see that our personality is kept within the Spirit of Life God gives us.

Jesus, while changed in appearance in His new heavenly Body, still expressed His personal traits and habits. See: Luke 24:13-33 + 1 Corinthians 13:12

Where Do Demons Reside

We have 153 occurrences using the above words to describe Satan and demons. That’s an awful lot for something a majority of Christians don’t even believe in.

So now knowing where a demon resides within a person, we can better understand the following:

Mark 4:13-15 “He said to them, “Don’t you understand this parable? How will you understand all of the parables?  (14)  The farmer sows the word.  (15)  The ones by the road are the ones where the word is sown; and when they have heard, immediately Satan comes, and takes away the word which has been sown in them.”

Acts 5:1-11 “But a certain man named Ananias, with Sapphira, his wife, sold a possession,  (2)  and kept back part of the price, his wife also being aware of it, and brought a certain part, and laid it at the apostles’ feet.  (3)  But Peter said, “Ananias, why has Satan filled your heart to lie to the Holy Spirit, and to keep back part of the price of the land?

2 Timothy 2:24-26 “The Lord’s servant must not quarrel, but be gentle towards all, able to teach, patient,  (25)  in gentleness correcting those who oppose him: perhaps God may give them repentance leading to a full knowledge of the truth,  (26)  and they may recover themselves out of the devil’s snare, having been taken captive by him to his will.”

Luke 22:3-6 “Satan entered into Judas, who was also called Iscariot, who was counted with the twelve.  (4)  He went away, and talked with the chief priests and captains about how he might deliver him to them.  (5)  They were glad, and agreed to give him money.  (6)  He consented, and sought an opportunity to deliver him to them in the absence of the multitude.”

Bonus: See how God also sends evil spirits to torment people who rebel against Him. And these evil spirits are demons:

1 Samuel 16:12-15 + 1 Samuel 16:21-23 + 1 Samuel 18:10-11 + Luke 8:27-30

Where Do Demons Reside

As we can see, Christians can be demonized, and we have learned the location within a person- in the flesh. We reviewed how we have a soul and spirit also within the flesh, which is the spiritual body. Now, we must keep ourselves clean through obeying the Holy Spirit and not the flesh. Then one day we will receive a fully renewed spirit and heavenly body- receiving incorruption and immortally so we can be with God forever.
