What-Does-God-Look-Like

  • God Wants to be Known, Seen, and Understood.

Deuteronomy 33:2-3 “He [Moses] said: The LORD came from Sinai and revealed himself to Israel from Seir. He appeared in splendor from Mount Paran, and came forth with ten thousand holy ones. With his right hand he gave a fiery law to them.  (3)  Surely he loves the people; all your holy ones are in your power. And they sit at your feet, each receiving your words.”

  • Man Was Created In The Image Of God To Bring Him Glory.

Genesis 1:26-27 “God said, “Let’s make man in our image, after our likeness. Let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the birds of the sky, and over the livestock, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth.”  (27)  God created man in his own image. In God’s image he created him; male and female he created them.”

  • Women Were Created In The Image Of Man To Bring Him Glory.

1 Corinthians 11:7-9 “A man should not cover his head, because he exists as God’s image and glory. But the woman is man’s glory. For man did not come from woman, but woman from man; and man was not created for woman, but woman for man.”

  • Legs: Standing

Exodus 34:5-7 “Yahweh descended in the cloud, and stood with him there, and proclaimed Yahweh’s name.”

  • Legs: Walking

Genesis 3:8-9  “When they heard the voice of the Yahweh God as he was walking in the garden during the breeze of the day, the man and his wife concealed themselves from the presence of the LORD God among the trees of the garden.  (9)  So the LORD God called out to the man, asking him, “Where are you?”

  • Feet

Exodus 24:10-11 “They saw the God of Israel. Under his feet was like a paved work of sapphire stone, like the skies for clearness.  (11)  He didn’t lay his hand on the nobles of the children of Israel. They saw God, and ate and drank.”

  • Arms

Jeremiah 32:17 “Ah Lord Yahweh! Behold, you have made the heavens and the earth by your great power and by your outstretched arm. There is nothing too hard for you,”

  • Hands

Exodus 33:21-23 “The LORD said, “Here is a place by me; you will station yourself on a rock.  (22)  When my glory passes by, I will put you in a cleft in the rock and will cover you with my hand while I pass by.”

  • Back & Face

Exodus 33:23  “Then I will take away my hand, and you will see my back, but my face must not be seen.”

  • God Has A Right And Left Side

Acts 7:55-56 “But Stephen, full of the Holy Spirit, looked intently toward heaven and saw the glory of God, and Jesus standing at the right hand of God.  (56)  “Look!” he said. “I see the heavens opened, and the Son of Man standing at the right hand of God!”

John 4:23-24  “But a time is coming – and now is here – when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth, for the Father seeks such people to be his worshipers.  (24)  God is spirit, and the people who worship him must worship in spirit and truth.”

Hebrews 12:29 “For our God is indeed a devouring fire.”

  • We Have A Spirit And Soul and Flesh And Blood.

1 Thessalonians 5:23 “Now may the God of peace himself make you completely holy and may your spirit and soul and body be kept entirely blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.”

Hebrews 4:12  “For the word of God is living and active and sharper than any double-edged sword, piercing even to the point of dividing soul from spirit, and joints from marrow; it is able to judge the desires and thoughts of the heart.”

  • We Will Be Made Fully Into His Image When Jesus Returns.

1 Corinthians 15:50-57 “Now this is what I am saying, brothers and sisters: Flesh and blood cannot inherit the kingdom of God, nor does the perishable inherit the imperishable.  (51)  Listen, I will tell you a mystery: We will not all sleep, but we will all be changed –  (52)  in a moment, in the blinking of an eye, at the last trumpet. For the trumpet will sound, and the dead will be raised imperishable, and we will be changed.  (53)  For this perishable body must put on the imperishable, and this mortal body must put on immortality.  (54)  Now when this perishable puts on the imperishable, and this mortal puts on immortality, then the saying that is written will happen, “Death has been swallowed up in victory.”  (55)  “Where, O death, is your victory? Where, O death, is your sting?”  (56)  The sting of death is sin, and the power of sin is the law.  (57)  But thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ!”

  • We Will Reflect The Image Of Our Father God And His Son Jesus Forever.

1 John 3:1-2 “(See what sort of love the Father has given to us: that we should be called God’s children – and indeed we are! For this reason the world does not know us: because it did not know him.  (2)  Dear friends, we are God’s children now, and what we will be has not yet been revealed. We know that whenever it is revealed we will be like him, because we will see him just as he is.”

  • Yet, Despite Our Similarities To God’s Form, His Is Very Unique And Special.

1 Timothy 1:17 “Now to the eternal king, immortal, invisible, the only God, be honor and glory forever and ever! Amen.”

Deuteronomy 4:14-19 “Yahweh commanded me at that time to teach you statutes and ordinances, that you might do them in the land where you go over to possess it.  (15)  Be very careful, for you saw no kind of form on the day that Yahweh spoke to you in Horeb out of the middle of the fire,  (16)  lest you corrupt yourselves, and make yourself a carved image in the form of any figure, the likeness of male or female,  (17)  the likeness of any animal that is on the earth, the likeness of any winged bird that flies in the sky,  (18)  the likeness of anything that creeps on the ground, the likeness of any fish that is in the water under the earth;  (19)  and lest you lift up your eyes to the sky, and when you see the sun and the moon and the stars, even all the army of the sky, you are drawn away and worship them, and serve them, which Yahweh your God has allotted to all the peoples under the whole sky.”

  • God Does Not Want To Be Made Into An Idol, Nor For Us To Worship An Image Of Our Own Limited Understanding.

Exodus 20:4-6  “You shall not make for yourself a carved image or any likeness of anything that is in heaven above or that is on the earth beneath or that is in the water below.  (5)  You shall not bow down to them or serve them, for I, the LORD, your God, am a jealous God, responding to the transgression of fathers by dealing with children to the third and fourth generations of those who reject me,  (6)  and showing covenant faithfulness to a thousand generations of those who love me and keep my commandments.”

  • The Danger Of Making God Exactly Like Man.

Romans 1:21-23 “Because, having known God they did not glorify Him as God, nor gave thanks, but were made vain in their reasoning’s, and their unintelligent heart was darkened,  (22)  professing to be wise, they were made fools,  (23)  and changed the glory of the incorruptible God into the likeness of an image of corruptible man, and of fowls, and of quadrupeds, and of reptiles.”

The Greatest Verse That I Can Think Of That Describes God’s Appearance

  • The Overall Appearance of God

Exodus 24:17-18 “And the sight of the glory of the LORD was like devouring fire on the top of the mount in the eyes of the children of Israel.”

  • In Heaven

Revelation 4:2 “Immediately I was in the Spirit, and a throne was standing in heaven with someone seated on it!”

  • Ezekiel 1: He called it a vision when God appears to him.
  • Daniel 10: He called it a vision when God appeared.
  • Exodus 19: God’s Presence for sure came down upon the mount. I think it is safe to presume that He came with His throne carried by the Cherubim.
  • I Would Say Yes, The Throne Travels.

Deuteronomy 33:26-27  “There is no one like God, O Jeshurun, who rides through the sky to help you, on the clouds in majesty.  (27)  The everlasting God is a refuge, and underneath you are his eternal arms; he has driven out enemies before you, and has said, “Destroy!”

  • God Comes and Goes From His Throne.

Daniel 7:9a “While I was watching, thrones were set up, and the Ancient of Days took his seat….”

  • God Sits Upon His Throne

1 Kings 22:19 “Micaiah said, “That being the case, listen to the LORD’s message. I saw the LORD sitting on his throne, with all the heavenly assembly standing beside him on his right and on his left.”

  • His Throne Sits Upon The Cherubim.

2 Kings 19:15 “Hezekiah prayed before the LORD: “LORD God of Israel, who is enthroned on the cherubim! You alone are God over all the kingdoms of the earth. You made the sky and the earth.”

  • The Four Faces.

Ezekiel 1:10 “As for the likeness of their faces, they had the face of a man. The four of them had the face of a lion on the right side. The four of them had the face of an ox on the left side. The four of them also had the face of an eagle.”

  • Comparing the Two Lists, We See The Ox Is The Face Of The Cherub.

Ezekiel 10:14 “Every one of them had four faces. The first face was the face of the cherub. The second face was the face of a man. The third face was the face of a lion. The fourth was the face of an eagle.”

  • This Confirms That The Two Lists Speak Of The Same Living Creature.

Ezekiel 10:20-22 “This is the living creature that I saw under the God of Israel by the river Chebar; and I knew that they were cherubim.  (21)  Every one had four faces, and every one four wings. The likeness of the hands of a man was under their wings.  (22)  As for the likeness of their faces, they were the faces which I saw by the river Chebar, their appearances and themselves. They each went straight forward.”

Ezekiel 1:5-12 “In the fire were what looked like four living beings. In their appearance they had human form,  (6)  but each had four faces and four wings.  (7)  Their legs were straight, but the soles of their feet were like calves’ feet. They gleamed like polished bronze.  (8)  They had human hands under their wings on their four sides. As for the faces and wings of the four of them,  (9)  their wings touched each other; they did not turn as they moved, but went straight ahead.  (10)  Their faces had this appearance: Each of the four had the face of a man, with the face of a lion on the right, the face of an ox on the left and also the face of an eagle.  (11)  Their wings were spread out above them; each had two wings touching the wings of one of the other beings on either side and two wings covering their bodies.  (12)  Each moved straight ahead – wherever the spirit would go, they would go, without turning as they went.  (13)  As for the likeness of the living creatures, their appearance was like burning coals of fire, like the appearance of torches. The fire went up and down among the living creatures. The fire was bright, and lightning went out of the fire.”

Ezekiel 1:23 “Under the expanse [Throne], their wings were straight, one toward the other. Each one had two which covered on this side, and each one had two which covered their bodies on that side.”

Ezekiel 10:12 “And all their flesh, and their backs, and their hands, and their wings, and the wheels, are full of eyes round about; to them four are their wheels.”

Ezekiel 1:22-23 “Over the heads of the living beings was something like a platform, glittering awesomely like ice, stretched out over their heads.  (23)  Under the platform their wings were stretched out, each toward the other. Each of the beings also had two wings covering its body.”

Ezekiel 1:26a “Above the platform over their heads was something like a sapphire shaped like a throne.”

Ezekiel 10:1 “As I watched, I saw on the platform above the top of the cherubim something like a sapphire, resembling the shape of a throne, appearing above them.”

Daniel 7:9d “His throne was ablaze with fire and its wheels were all aflame.”

Revelation 4:3b “…a rainbow looking like it was made of emerald encircled the throne.”

Revelation 4:5a “From the throne came out flashes of lightning and roaring and crashes of thunder.”

Revelation 4:6b-7 “… In the middle of the throne, and around the throne were four living creatures full of eyes before and behind.  (7)  The first creature was like a lion, and the second creature like a calf, and the third creature had a face like a man, and the fourth was like a flying eagle.”

Ezekiel 1:13-21 “In the middle of the living beings was something like burning coals of fire or like torches. It moved back and forth among the living beings. It was bright, and lightning was flashing out of the fire.  (14)  The living beings moved backward and forward as quickly as flashes of lightning.  (15)  Then I looked, and I saw one wheel on the ground beside each of the four beings.  (16)  The appearance of the wheels and their construction was like gleaming jasper, and all four wheels looked alike. Their structure was like a wheel within a wheel.  (17)  When they moved they would go in any of the four directions they faced without turning as they moved.  (18)  Their rims were high and awesome, and the rims of all four wheels were full of eyes all around.  (19)  When the living beings moved, the wheels beside them moved; when the living beings rose up from the ground, the wheels rose up too.  (20)  Wherever the spirit would go, they would go, and the wheels would rise up beside them because the spirit of the living being was in the wheel.  (21)  When the living beings moved, the wheels moved, and when they stopped moving, the wheels stopped. When they rose up from the ground, the wheels rose up from the ground; the wheels rose up beside them because the spirit of the living being was in the wheel.” As Also Described in Revelations 4:7-8

  • The Sound Of Its Movement

Ezekiel 1:24  “When they moved, I heard the sound of their wings – it was like the sound of rushing waters, or the voice of the Sovereign One, or the tumult of an army. When they stood still, they lowered their wings.”

Ezekiel 3:12-13  “Then a wind lifted me up and I heard a great rumbling sound behind me as the glory of the LORD rose from its place,  (13)  and the sound of the living beings’ wings brushing against each other, and the sound of the wheels alongside them, a great rumbling sound.”

Isaiah 6:4  “ and the house was filled with smoke.”

Revelation 4: 4 “In a circle around the throne were twenty-four other thrones, and seated on those thrones were twenty-four elders. They were dressed in white clothing and had golden crowns on their heads.”

Revelation 4:5b-6a “….Seven flaming torches, which are the seven spirits of God, were burning in front of the throne  (6)  and in front of the throne was something like a sea of glass, like crystal….”

Isaiah 6:2-4 “Above him stood the seraphim. Each one had six wings. With two he covered his face. With two he covered his feet. With two he flew.  (3)  One called to another, and said, “Holy, holy, holy, is Yahweh of Armies! The whole earth is full of his glory!”  (4)  The foundations of the thresholds shook at the voice of him who called, and the house was filled with smoke.”

Revelation 4:8-11 “The four living creatures, each one of them having six wings, are full of eyes around and within. They have no rest day and night, saying, “Holy, holy, holy is the Lord God, Almighty, who was and who is and who is to come!”  (9)  When the living creatures give glory, honor, and thanks to him who sits on the throne, to him who lives forever and ever,  (10)  the twenty-four elders fall down before him who sits on the throne, and worship him who lives forever and ever, and throw their crowns before the throne, saying,  (11)  “Worthy are you, our Lord and God, the Holy One, to receive the glory, the honor, and the power, for you created all things, and because of your desire they existed, and were created!”

Hebrews 12:29 “For our God is indeed a devouring fire.”
