War in heaven

War In Heaven – Satan’s Resume: The 2nd

War In Heaven

Isaiah 14:12-14 “How you have fallen from heaven, shining one, son of the dawn! How you are cut down to the ground, who laid the nations low!  (13)  You said in your heart, “I will ascend into heaven! I will exalt my throne above the stars of God! I will sit on the mountain of assembly, in the far north!  (14)  I will ascend above the heights of the clouds! I will make myself like the Most High!”

Key Concept: Satan’s attempt to exalt his throne over God was a long and ongoing process. From creation until the death of Jesus, Satan was making every attempt to subvert God’s kingdom.

War In Heaven

-The breakdown of the 2 wars in heaven-

War In Heaven

  • Setting the stage for the description of the wars.

~ (Revelation 12:1) “A great sign was seen in heaven: a woman clothed with the sun, and the moon under her feet, and on her head a crown of twelve stars.”

This is the nation of Israel and the 12 tribes.

Genesis 37:9He dreamed yet another dream, and told it to his brothers, and said, “Behold, I have dreamed yet another dream: and behold, the sun and the moon and eleven stars bowed down to me.”

War In Heaven

~ (Revelation 12:2) “She was with child. She cried out in pain, laboring to give birth.”

Jesus’ birth creates a new nation for all the children of God who believe in Him.

Isaiah 66:7-8Before she travailed, she gave birth. Before her pain came, she delivered a son.  (8)  Who has heard of such a thing? Who has seen such things? Shall a land be born in one day? Shall a nation be born at once? For as soon as Zion travailed, she gave birth to her children.”

Romans 10:19-21 “But I ask, didn’t Israel know? First Moses says, “I will provoke you to jealousy with that which is no nation. I will make you angry with a nation void of understanding.”  (20)  Isaiah is very bold, and says, “I was found by those who didn’t seek me. I was revealed to those who didn’t ask for me.”  (21)  But as to Israel he says, “All day long I stretched out my hands to a disobedient and contrary people.”

Galatians 3:27-29 “For as many of you as were baptized into Christ have put on Christ.  (28)  There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free man, there is neither male nor female; for you are all one in Christ Jesus.  (29)  If you are Christ’s, then you are Abraham’s offspring and heirs according to promise.”

War In Heaven

– 1st War In Heaven –

  • Back story to fill in the gaps.

~ (Revelation 12:3) “Another sign was seen in heaven. Behold, a great red dragon, having seven heads and ten horns, and on his heads seven crowns.”

~ (Revelation 12:4a) “His tail drew one third of the stars of the sky, and threw them to the earth.”

Jesus shares what appears to be a reference of this moment.

Luke 10:17-20 “And the seventy returned with joy, saying, Lord, even the devils are subject unto us in thy name.  (18)  And he said unto them, *I beheld Satan fallen as lightning from heaven.  (19)  Behold, I have given you authority to tread upon serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy: and nothing shall in any wise hurt you.  (20)  Howbeit in this rejoice not, that the spirits are subject unto you; but rejoice that your names are written in heaven.”  *Past Tense

Some say that verse 18 is a response to what the 70 said about casting out demons and Jesus was responding that He saw it. I’m not as sure about this as it seems like a definitive statement of a prior occurrence. They say “we casted out demons,” and He says “I saw the devil thrown down out of heaven.” Relating their lesser action to the greater action of the devil being cast down, hence giving them their power.

War In Heaven

~ (Revelation 12:4b)The dragon stood before the woman who was about to give birth, so that when she gave birth he might devour her child.”

Fulfilling the declaration of God from the dawn of time.

Genesis 3:14-15 “Yahweh God said to the serpent, “Because you have done this, you are cursed above all livestock, and above every animal of the field. You shall go on your belly and you shall eat dust all the days of your life.  (15)  I will put hostility between you and the woman, and between your offspring and her offspring. He will bruise your head, and you will bruise his heel.”

War In Heaven

-Birth Of Jesus-

This is the great dividing line of the two war description. We will notice that 1/3 of the angels and Satan were thrown to earth before the Birth of Jesus. This is the first war.

~ (Revelation 12:5a) “She gave birth to a son, a male child, who is to rule all the nations with a rod of iron.”

  • Proof that this is Jesus:

Revelation 2:26-27 “He who overcomes, and he who keeps my works to the end, to him I will give authority over the nations.  (27)  He will rule them with a rod of iron, shattering them like clay pots; as I also have received of my Father:”

War In Heaven

-The earthly ministry of Jesus-

Jesus tells His disciples that Satan, the prince of this world, has been judged. Yet, we will find out that he had not yet been cast out of heaven.

John 16:5-12 “But now I am going to him who sent me, and none of you asks me, ‘Where are you going?’  (6)  But because I have told you these things, sorrow has filled your heart.  (7)  Nevertheless I tell you the truth: It is to your advantage that I go away, for if I don’t go away, the Counselor won’t come to you. But if I go, I will send him to you.  (8)  When he has come, he will convict the world about sin, about righteousness, and about judgment;  (9)  about sin, because they don’t believe in me;  (10)  about righteousness, because I am going to my Father, and you won’t see me any more;  (11)  about judgment, because the prince of this world has been judged.  (12)  “I have yet many things to tell you, but you can’t bear them now.”

Jesus tells us that from the time that John started preaching the Messiah’s soon coming, that heaven itself went to war against the devil.

Matthew 11:12 “But from the days of John the Baptist until now, the kingdom of Heaven suffers violence, and the violent seize it.”

“Young’s Literal Translation of the Bible” reads as such:

Matthew 11:12 “And, from the days of John the Baptist till now, the reign of the heavens doth suffer violence, and violent men do take it by force,”

  • He is talking about Heaven, not the earth or Israel.

John 18:36  “Jesus answered, “My kingdom is not of this world. If my kingdom were of this world, my servants would have been fighting, that I might not be delivered over to the Jews. But my kingdom is not from the world.”

War In Heaven

-Jesus’ Death and Resurrection-

Colossians 1:19-20 For all the fullness was pleased to dwell in him;  (20)  and through him to reconcile all things to himself, by him, whether things on the earth, or things in the heavens, having made peace through the blood of his cross.”

Colossians 2:14-15 “wiping out the handwriting in ordinances which was against us; and he has taken it out of the way, nailing it to the cross;  (15)  having stripped the principalities and the powers, he made a show of them openly, triumphing over them in it.”

War In Heaven

~ (Revelation 12:5b) “Her child was caught up to God, and to his throne.”

Proof that this is Jesus:

Revelation 3:21 “He who overcomes, I will give to him to sit down with me on my throne, as I also overcame, and sat down with my Father on his throne.”

Revelation 22:1 “He showed me a river of water of life, clear as crystal, proceeding out of the throne of God and of the Lamb,”

See: Acts 1:9-11 & Luke 24:50-53  for Ascension

War In Heaven

What happened to the churches of God after Jesus went to Heaven?

~ (Revelation 12:6) “The woman fled into the wilderness, where she has a place prepared by God, that there they may nourish her one thousand two hundred sixty days.”

Acts 8:1 “Saul was consenting to his death. A great persecution arose against the assembly which was in Jerusalem in that day. They were all scattered abroad throughout the regions of Judea and Samaria, except for the apostles.”

This was to facilitate God’s command to preach to all the nations.

Matthew 24:14 “And this gospel of the kingdom shall be proclaimed in all the world as a witness to all nations. And then the end shall come.”

War In Heaven

– 2nd War In Heaven –

~ (Revelation 12:7) “There was war in the sky. Michael and his angels made war on the dragon. The dragon and his angels made war.”

The continuation of the war mentioned by Jesus while on earth.

Matthew 11:12 “But from the days of John the Baptist until now, the kingdom of Heaven suffers violence, and the violent seize it.”

Jesus had to go to Heaven and purify the temple of God from the stain of sin and rebellion of Satan, his angels, and for man’s sin on earth.

Colossians 1:20 and through him to reconcile all things to himself, by him, whether things on the earth, or things in the heavens, having made peace through the blood of his cross.”

Hebrews 9:11-28But Christ having come as a high priest of the coming good things, through the greater and more perfect tabernacle, not made with hands, that is to say, not of this creation,  (12)  nor yet through the blood of goats and calves, but through his own blood, entered in once for all into the Holy Place, having obtained eternal redemption.  (13)  For if the blood of goats and bulls, and the ashes of a heifer sprinkling those who have been defiled, sanctify to the cleanness of the flesh:  (14)  how much more will the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered himself without defect to God, cleanse your conscience from dead works to serve the living God?  (15)  For this reason he is the mediator of a new covenant, since a death has occurred for the redemption of the transgressions that were under the first covenant, that those who have been called may receive the promise of the eternal inheritance.  (16)  For where a last will and testament is, there must of necessity be the death of him who made it.  (17)  For a will is in force where there has been death, for it is never in force while he who made it lives.  (18)  Therefore even the first covenant has not been dedicated without blood.  (19)  For when every commandment had been spoken by Moses to all the people according to the law, he took the blood of the calves and the goats, with water and scarlet wool and hyssop, and sprinkled both the book itself and all the people,  (20)  saying, “This is the blood of the covenant which God has commanded you.”  (21)  Moreover he sprinkled the tabernacle and all the vessels of the ministry in the same way with the blood.  (22)  According to the law, nearly everything is cleansed with blood, and apart from shedding of blood there is no remission.  (23)  It was necessary therefore that the copies of the things in the heavens should be cleansed with these; but the heavenly things themselves with better sacrifices than these.  (24)  For Christ hasn’t entered into holy places made with hands, which are representations of the true, but into heaven itself, now to appear in the presence of God for us;  (25)  nor yet that he should offer himself often, as the high priest enters into the holy place year by year with blood not his own,  (26)  or else he must have suffered often since the foundation of the world. But now once at the end of the ages, he has been revealed to put away sin by the sacrifice of himself.  (27)  Inasmuch as it is appointed for men to die once, and after this, judgment,  (28)  so Christ also, having been offered once to bear the sins of many, will appear a second time, without sin, to those who are eagerly waiting for him for salvation.”

He did this with His own blood as He offered Himself up to God- Holy and Spotless

Hebrews 7:26-27  “For such a high priest was fitting for us: holy, guiltless, undefiled, separated from sinners, and made higher than the heavens;  (27)  who doesn’t need, like those high priests, to offer up sacrifices daily, first for his own sins, and then for the sins of the people. For he did this once for all, when he offered up himself.”

This is why Jesus could not have sinful flesh touch Him. As He was spiritually pure as the sacrifice of God for sin, and had to go present Himself to the Father pure.

John 20:15-17 “Jesus said to her, Woman, why do you weep? Whom do you seek? Supposing Him to be the gardener, she said to Him, Sir, if you have carried Him away from here, tell me where you have laid Him and I will take Him away.  (16)  Jesus said to her, Mary! She turned herself and said to Him, Rabboni! (which is to say, Master!)

(17)  Jesus said to her, Do not touch Me, for I have not yet ascended to My Father. But go to My brothers and say to them, I ascend to My Father and Your Father, and to My God and your God.”

War In Heaven

~ (Revelation 12:8) “They didn’t prevail, neither was a place found for them any more in heaven.

Jesus was made High Priest forever.

Hebrews 5:5-6 So also Christ didn’t glorify himself to be made a high priest, but it was he who said to him, “You are my Son. Today I have become your father.”  (6)  As he says also in another place, “You are a priest forever, after the order of Melchizedek.”

Jesus exalted as High Priest over all spiritual power.

Ephesians 1:20-23  “which he worked in Christ, when he raised him from the dead, and made him to sit at his right hand in the heavenly places,  (21)  far above all rule, and authority, and power, and dominion, and every name that is named, not only in this age, but also in that which is to come.  (22)  He put all things in subjection under his feet, and gave him to be head over all things for the assembly,  (23)  which is his body, the fullness of him who fills all in all.”

Philippians 2:8-11 “And being found in human form, he humbled himself, becoming obedient to the point of death, yes, the death of the cross.  (9)  Therefore God also highly exalted him, and gave to him the name which is above every name;  (10)  that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of those in heaven, those on earth, and those under the earth,  (11)  and that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.”

God now rejoices over the defeated devil and his followers, celebrating Jesus taking His rightful role in heaven.

Psalms 2:4-9 “He who sits in the heavens will laugh. The Lord will have them in derision.  (5)  Then he will speak to them in his anger, and terrify them in his wrath:  (6)  “Yet I have set my King on my holy hill of Zion.”  (7)  I will tell of the decree. Yahweh said to me, “You are my son. Today I have become your father.  (8)  Ask of me, and I will give the nations for your inheritance, the uttermost parts of the earth for your possession.  (9)  You shall break them with a rod of iron. You shall dash them in pieces like a potter’s vessel.”    Just like Revelation 2:7 + 12:5 + 19:5 said.

War In Heaven

~ (Revelation 12:9) “The great dragon was thrown down, the old serpent, he who is called the devil and Satan, the deceiver of the whole world. He was thrown down to the earth, and his angels were thrown down with him.”

Jesus prophecies the plan to His followers.

John 12:30-32 “Jesus answered, “This voice hasn’t come for my sake, but for your sakes.  (31)  Now is the judgment of this world. Now the prince of this world *will be cast out.  (32)  And I, if I am lifted up from the earth, will draw all people to myself.” *Future Tense

Obviously, this is speaking of Heaven because the devil was already on the earth. But he could go to Heaven as we talked about in our last lesson. Now the time had come to banish him and the fallen angels from the throne room of heaven; no longer able to accuse the brethren. We will see another confirmation of this point.

As described in Revelations 12:8 + 12-13

War In Heaven

-As for The rest of the Fallen Angels-

As Satan was cast to the earth, the fallen angels that fought with him against God were thrown straight into hell.

2 Peter 2:4 “For if God did not spare the angels who sinned, but threw them into hell and locked them up in chains in utter darkness, to be kept until the judgment,”

Jude 1:5-6  “Now I desire to remind you, though you already know this, that the Lord, having saved a people out of the land of Egypt, afterward destroyed those who didn’t believe.  (6)  Angels who didn’t keep their first domain, but deserted their own dwelling place, he has kept in everlasting bonds under darkness for the judgment of the great day.

Much like Satan will be bound for a 1000 years.

Revelation 20:2-3 “And he laid hold on the dragon, that old serpent, which is the Devil, and Satan, and bound him a thousand years, (3)  And cast him into the bottomless pit, and shut him up, and set a seal upon him, that he should deceive the nations no more, till the thousand years should be fulfilled: and after that he must be loosed a little season.”

War In Heaven

~ (Revelation 12:10) “I heard a loud voice in heaven, saying, “Now the salvation, the power, and the Kingdom of our God, and the authority of his Christ has come; for the accuser of our brothers has been thrown down, who accuses them before our God day and night.”

War In Heaven

~ (Revelation 12:11) “They overcame him because of the Lamb’s blood, and because of the word of their testimony. They didn’t love their life, even to death.”

War In Heaven

~ (Revelation 12:12a) “Therefore rejoice, heavens, and you who dwell in them.”

Satan has now been cast down out of Heaven, never to return. The temple has been purified of his sin and rebellion and the courts of heaven are free of Satan and his angels forever.

War In Heaven

~ (Revelation 12:12b) Woe to the earth and to the sea, because the devil has gone down to you, having great wrath, knowing that he has but a short time.”

Yet, the people of earth are warned of what has happened.

1 Peter 5:8-9Be sober and self-controlled. Be watchful. Your adversary, the devil, walks around like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour.  (9)  Withstand him steadfast in your faith, knowing that your brothers who are in the world are undergoing the same sufferings.”

James 4:6-10 “But he gives more grace. Therefore it says, “God resists the proud, but gives grace to the humble.”  (7)  Be subject therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.  (8)  Draw near to God, and he will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners; and purify your hearts, you double-minded.  (9)  Lament, mourn, and weep. Let your laughter be turned to mourning, and your joy to gloom.  (10)  Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and he will exalt you.”

War In Heaven

~ (Revelation 12:13) “When the dragon saw that he was thrown down to the earth, he persecuted the woman who gave birth to the male child.”

Ephesians 6:10-13Finally, be strong in the Lord, and in the strength of his might.  (11)  Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil.  (12)  For our wrestling is not against flesh and blood, but against the principalities, against the powers, against the world’s rulers of the darkness of this age, and against the spiritual forces of wickedness in the heavenly places.  (13)  Therefore put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and, having done all, to stand.”

War In Heaven

~ (Revelation 12:17) “The dragon grew angry with the woman, and went away to make war with the rest of her offspring, who keep God’s commandments and hold Jesus’ testimony.”

Notice “who” the Devil hates and makes war against. This becomes exceedingly important when we discuss the “Son of Perdition”.

War In Heaven

-Jesus Takes Control-

Jesus has now taken spiritual control of Heaven and His people:  but not of the earth yet! This is prophesied in the following verse:

Revelation 11:15 “And the seventh angel sounded. And there were great voices in Heaven, saying, The kingdoms of this world have become the kingdoms of our Lord, and of His Christ. And He will reign forever and ever.”

This will be the completion of taking ownership of all of creation. This will be the final confrontation between God, Jesus, and Satan. Satan will be manhandled and be fruitless in any attempt to resist.

Revelation 20:10 “The devil who deceived them was thrown into the lake of fire and sulfur, where the beast and the false prophet are also. They will be tormented day and night forever and ever.”

War In Heaven

As we have seen, there were two wars- one at creation and one nearing the end of creation. Jesus reigns victorious over the forces of darkness.  The story is not finished yet and total retrieval has not happened. Before this happens, the “Son of Perdition” must be exposed.

War In Heaven

A.K.A “Son Of Destruction”

2 Thessalonians 2:1-4  “Now, brothers, concerning the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, and our gathering together to him, we ask you  (2)  not to be quickly shaken in your mind, and not be troubled, either by spirit, or by word, or by letter as if from us, saying that the day of Christ has already come.  (3)  Let no one deceive you in any way. For it will not be, unless the rebellion comes first, and the man of sin is revealed, the son of destruction,  (4)  he who opposes and exalts himself against all that is called God or that is worshiped; so that he sits as God in the temple of God, setting himself up as God.”
