Repentance

~The Unbroken Cry Of GOD To His People~

John Came Saying ~

Matthew 3:1-2 “In those days, John the Baptizer came, preaching in the wilderness of Judea, saying, (2) “Repent, for the Kingdom of Heaven is at hand!”

Jesus Came Saying ~

Matthew 4:17 “From that time, Jesus began to preach, and to say, “Repent! For the Kingdom of Heaven is at hand.”

The Disciples Were Sent Saying ~

Mark 6:7+12 “He called to himself the twelve, and began to send them out two by two; and he gave them authority over the unclean spirits
They went out and preached that people should repent.”

Acts 3:19-21 “Repent therefore, and turn again, that your sins may be blotted out, so that there may come times of refreshing from the presence of the Lord,  (20)  and that he may send Christ Jesus, who was ordained for you before,  (21)  whom heaven must receive until the times of restoration of all things, which God spoke long ago by the mouth of his holy prophets.”

God Is Declaring This Day ~

Acts 17:29-31 “Being then the offspring of God, we ought not to think that the Divine Nature is like gold, or silver, or stone, engraved by art and design of man.  (30)  The times of ignorance therefore God overlooked. But now he commands that all people everywhere should repent,  (31)  because he has appointed a day in which he will judge the world in righteousness by the man whom he has ordained; of which he has given assurance to all men, in that he has raised him from the dead.”

Jesus Is Still Declaring ~

Revelation 3:19-22 “As many as I love, I reprove and chasten. Be zealous therefore, and repent.  (20)  Behold, I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, then I will come in to him, and will dine with him, and he with me.  (21)  He who overcomes, I will give to him to sit down with me on my throne, as I also overcame, and sat down with my Father on his throne.  (22)  He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the assemblies.”

So, as Christians, what should we declare to the people?

~REPENTANCE~

Repentance

~Repentance & The Forgiveness Of Sin~

Acts 5:31 “God exalted him (JESUS) with his right hand to be a Prince and a Savior, to give repentance to Israel, and remission of sins.”

Acts 2:38  “Peter said to them, “Repent, and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of sins,
”

Repentance

  • What Is Sin?

1 John 3:4-6 “Everyone who practices sin also practices lawlessness, for sin is lawlessness.  (5)  And you know that He was revealed that He might take away our sins, and in Him is no sin.  (6)  Everyone who abides in Him does not sin. Everyone who sins has not seen Him nor known Him.”

  • What Law Is That Exactly?

Romans 7:7-13 “What shall we say then? Is the law sin? Let it not be said! But I did not know sin except through the law. For also I did not know lust except the law said, You shall not lust.  (8)  But sin, taking occasion by the commandment, worked in me all kinds of lust. For apart from law sin was dead.  (9)  For I was alive without the law once. But when the commandment came, sin revived and I died.  (10)  And the commandment, which was to life, was found to be death to me.  (11)  For sin, taking occasion by the commandment, deceived me, and by it killed me.  (12)  So indeed the Law is holy, and the commandment is holy and just and good.  (13)  Then has that which is good become death to me? Let it not be! But sin, that it might appear to be sin, working death in me by that which is good; in order that sin might become exceedingly sinful by the commandment.”

  • What Commandments Is He Referring To?

Romans 13:9 “For: “Do not commit adultery; do not murder; do not steal; do not bear false witness; do not lust;” and if there is any other commandment, it is summed up in this word, “You shall love your neighbor as yourself.”

  • Does This Mean All Of The Commandments?

James 2:10-11 “For whoever shall keep the whole Law and yet offend in one point, he is guilty of all.  (11)  For He who said, “Do not commit adultery,” also said, “Do not murder.” But if you do not commit adultery, yet if you murder, you have become a transgressor of the Law.”

  • So What Are The Commandments?

In Short Form, From Exodus  Chapter 20:

  1. You shall have no other gods before Me.
  2. You shall not make to yourselves any graven image.
  3. You shall not take the name of YHWH your God in vain.
  4. Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy.
  5. Honor your father and your mother.
  6. You shall not kill.
  7. You shall not commit adultery.
  8. You shall not steal.
  9. You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor.
  10. You shall not covet
  11. John 13:34-35 “I give you a new commandment, that you love one another. As I have loved you, you should also love one another.  (35) By this all shall know that you are My disciples, if you have love toward one another.”

SO, repentance is to turn away from breaking the Law of God.

Repentance

~How Repentance Works & Looks Like ~

  • It’s God’s Affection That Brings About Repentance ~

Romans 2:4 “Or do you despise the riches of his goodness, forbearance, and patience, not knowing that the goodness of God leads you to repentance?”

John 6:44 “No man can come to me except the Father who has sent me draws him, and I will raise him up at the last day.”

John 6:65 “no man can come to me except it were given to him by the father.”

True Repentance Is Responding To The Affectionate Love Of God

Repentance

  • Real Repentance Produces Godly Sorrow ~

2 Corinthians 7:8-11 “For though I made you sorry with my letter, I do not regret it, though I did regret it. For I see that my letter made you sorry, though just for a while.  (9)  I now rejoice, not that you were made sorry, but that you were made sorry to repentance. For you were made sorry in a godly way, that you might suffer loss by us in nothing.  (10)  For godly sorrow produces repentance to salvation, which brings no regret. But the sorrow of the world produces death.  (11)  For behold, this same thing, that you were made sorry in a godly way, what earnest care it worked in you. Yes, what defense, indignation, fear, longing, zeal, and vengeance! In everything you demonstrated yourselves to be pure in the matter.”

Repentance

  • There Is No True Belief Without Repentance ~

Matthew 21:32 “For John came to you in the way of righteousness, and you didn’t believe him, but the tax collectors and the prostitutes believed him. When you saw it, you didn’t even repent afterward, that you might believe him.”

John 20:31  “But these are recorded so that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name.”

Repentance

  • ~Repentance Requires A New Type Of Works ~

~ Good Work

Acts 26:20 “But declared first to them of Damascus, at Jerusalem, and throughout all the country of Judea, and also to the Gentiles, that they should repent and turn to God, doing works worthy of repentance.”

Matthew 3:7-11 “But when he saw many of the Pharisees and Sadducees coming for his baptism, he said to them, “You offspring of vipers, who warned you to flee from the wrath to come?  (8)  Therefore produce fruit worthy of repentance!  (9)  Don’t think to yourselves, ‘We have Abraham for our father,’ for I tell you that God is able to raise up children to Abraham from these stones.  (10)  “Even now the ax lies at the root of the trees. Therefore every tree that doesn’t produce good fruit is cut down, and cast into the fire.  (11)  I indeed baptize you in water for repentance, but he who comes after me is mightier than I, whose shoes I am not worthy to carry. He will baptize you in the Holy Spirit.”

Repentance

~ Bad Work

Revelation 9:20-21  “The rest of mankind, who were not killed with these plagues, didn’t repent of the works of their hands, that they wouldn’t worship demons, and the idols of gold, and of silver, and of brass, and of stone, and of wood; which can’t see, hear, or walk.  (21)  They didn’t repent of their murders, their sorceries, their sexual immorality, or their thefts.”

Repentance

If we do not switch our labor of rebellion to works of obedience, we will fail to produce fruit worthy of repentance. Then we will receive a terrible wage of pay for our efforts!

Romans 6:23 “For the payoff of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.”

Revelation 2:21-23 “I gave her time to repent, but she refuses to repent of her sexual immorality.  (22)  Behold, I will throw her into a bed, and those who commit adultery with her into great oppression, unless they repent of her works.  (23)  I will kill her children with Death, and all the assemblies will know that I am he who searches the minds and hearts. I will give to each one of you according to your deeds.”

1 John 3:7-10 “Little children, let no one lead you astray. He who does righteousness is righteous, even as he is righteous.  (8)  He who sins is of the devil, for the devil has been sinning from the beginning. To this end the Son of God was revealed: that he might destroy the works of the devil.  (9)  Whoever is born of God doesn’t commit sin, because his seed remains in him; and he can’t sin, because he is born of God.  (10)  In this the children of God are revealed, and the children of the devil. Whoever doesn’t do righteousness is not of God, neither is he who doesn’t love his brother.”

Repentance

~Benefits Of Repentance~

  • You Will Receive The Holy Spirit

Acts 2:37-38 “Now when they heard this, they were cut to the heart, and said to Peter and the rest of the apostles, “Brothers, what shall we do?”  (38)  Peter said to them, “Repent, and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of sins, and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.”

Repentance

  • The Holy Spirit Is Given To Those Who Obey!

Acts 5:32 “We are His witnesses of these things; and so also is the Holy Spirit, whom God has given to those who obey him.”

Repentance – Obedience- & The Holy Spirit is a 3-legged stool.

Repentance

  • Repentance Leads To Knowing The Truth Of God ~

2 Timothy 2:24-26  “The Lord’s servant must not quarrel, but be gentle towards all, able to teach, patient,  (25)  in gentleness correcting those who oppose him: perhaps God may give them repentance leading to a full knowledge of the truth,  (26)  and they may recover themselves out of the devil’s snare, having been taken captive by him to his will.”

Repentance

  • Repentance Can Lead To Physical Healing ~

Hebrews 12:12-17 “Therefore lift up the hands that hang down and the feeble knees,  (13)  and make straight paths for your feet, so what is lame may not be dislocated, but rather be healed.  (14)  Follow after peace with all men, and the sanctification without which no man will see the Lord,  (15)  looking carefully lest there be any man who falls short of the grace of God; lest any root of bitterness springing up trouble you, and many be defiled by it;  (16)  lest there be any sexually immoral person, or profane person, like Esau, who sold his birthright for one meal.  (17)  For you know that even when he afterward desired to inherit the blessing, he was rejected, for he found no place for a change of mind though he sought it diligently with tears.”

Repentance

  • When people do not repent, they are stealing away God’s Glory! Yet, the implication is that when you do repent- YOU DO!!!!~

Revelation 16:9-11 “People were scorched with great heat, and people blasphemed the name of God who has the power over these plagues. They didn’t repent and give him glory.  (10)  The fifth poured out his bowl on the throne of the beast, and his kingdom was darkened. They gnawed their tongues because of the pain,  (11)  and they blasphemed the God of heaven because of their pains and their sores. They didn’t repent of their works.”

Repentance

~The Terrible Day Of Judgment Is Coming~

Romans 2:1-11 “Therefore you are without excuse, O man, whoever you are who judge. For in that which you judge another, you condemn yourself. For you who judge practice the same things.  (2)  We know that the judgment of God is according to truth against those who practice such things.  (3)  Do you think this, O man who judges those who practice such things, and do the same, that you will escape the judgment of God?  (4)  Or do you despise the riches of his goodness, forbearance, and patience, not knowing that the goodness of God leads you to repentance?  (5)  But according to your hardness and unrepentant heart you are treasuring up for yourself wrath in the day of wrath, revelation, and of the righteous judgment of God;  (6)  who “will pay back to everyone according to their works:”  (7)  to those who by perseverance in well-doing seek for glory, honor, and incorruptibility, eternal life;  (8)  but to those who are self-seeking, and don’t obey the truth, but obey unrighteousness, will be wrath and indignation,  (9)  oppression and anguish, on every soul of man who does evil, to the Jew first, and also to the Greek.  (10)  But glory, honor, and peace go to every man who does good, to the Jew first, and also to the Greek.  (11)  For there is no partiality with God.”

Psalms 7:8-13 “For the LORD will judge the peoples. Judge me according to my righteousness, LORD, and according to my integrity, Exalted One.  (9)  Let the evil of the wicked come to an end, but establish the righteous. For you are the righteous God who discerns the inner thoughts.  (10)  God is my shield, the one who delivers the upright in heart.  (11)  God is a righteous judge, a God who is angry with sinners every day.  (12)  If the ungodly one doesn’t repent, God will sharpen his sword; he will string his bow and prepare it.  (13)  He prepares weapons of death for himself, he makes his arrows into fiery shafts.”

Revelation 2:16 “Repent therefore, or else I (Jesus)  am coming to you quickly, and I will make war against them with the sword of my mouth.”

Revelation 19:15+21 “Out of his (Jesus’) mouth proceeds a sharp, double-edged sword, that with it he should strike the nations. He will rule them with an iron rod. He treads the wine press of the fierceness of the wrath of God, the Almighty
The rest were killed with the sword of him who sat on the horse, the sword which came out of his mouth. All the birds were filled with their flesh.”

Repentance

~Repent Today- This Very Moment!~

2 Corinthians 6:1-2 “Working together, we entreat also that you do not receive the grace of God in vain,  (2)  for he says, “At an acceptable time I listened to you, in a day of salvation I helped you.”Behold, now is the acceptable time. Behold, now is the day of salvation.”

Joshua 24:14-15 “Now therefore fear Yahweh, and serve him in sincerity and in truth. Put away the gods which your fathers served beyond the River, in Egypt; and serve Yahweh.  (15)  If it seems evil to you to serve Yahweh, choose today whom you will serve; whether the gods which your fathers served that were beyond the River, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land you dwell; but as for me and my house, we will serve Yahweh.”

Repentance

 â€œRepent ~or~ DIE”

Luke 13:3 “I (Jesus) tell you, no, but unless you repent, you will all perish in the same way.”

Recap:  We have learned that the call to repentance has not changed. It has never ended. To this very day, God and Jesus are telling those called by Him to repent of their sins! We have learned that breaking the 10 Commandment Law of God is called sin.  Now, as children of God, we are required to call others to repentance.

We cannot earn our salvation by being “good enough”. We are made righteous through faith in Jesus. Yet, now that we have been offered the gift of salvation, we are called to obey God. This act of repentance or the stopping of our old ways of sin, turning it into the new way of obedience to God’s ways- brings many blessing with it. We are not to keep this call to ourselves, but to share it with the world. By knowing that repentance brings God glory, and restores our relationship with Him. Since the wages of sin is death, we are promised by God to die for our sins if we do not repent and stop sinning. Then again, we are told we will receive the gift of salvation from Him if we do. We are saved by faith in Jesus Christ, yet there is no belief without repentance. For Jesus to be our Savior, He must be our Lord also. This demands that we obey Him in our salvational state.
