Lord’s Supper
Lord’s Supper
Today, we will be learning about the power of the Lord’s Supper. We will unlock the connection of the Passover and foot washing, as it pertains to the Lord’s Supper. Often called the “meal that heals”, it can also be the meal that can inflict sickness and even death. We will tread very carefully through the facts and seek the full blessing of this sacred rite. When performed with a humble heart before God, it is one of the most powerful weapons of our warfare that we can utilize for our victory. So, without further delay, let’s look deep into this amazing blessing.
John 6:53-58 “Then Jesus says to them, Truly, truly, I say to you, Unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man, and drink His blood, you do not have life in yourselves. (54) Whoever partakes of My flesh and drinks My blood has eternal life, and I will raise him up at the last day. (55) For My flesh is food indeed, and My blood is drink indeed. (56) He who partakes of My flesh and drinks My blood dwells in Me, and I in him. (57) As the living Father has sent Me, and I live through the Father, so he who partakes of Me, even he shall live by Me. (58) This is the Bread which came down from Heaven, not as your fathers ate the manna, and died; he who partakes of this Bread shall live forever.”

Jesus- The Passover- Lamb Of God
John 1:29 “The next day, he saw Jesus coming to him, and said, “Behold, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!”
Jesus- Our Passover- Takes Away Our Sins
1 Corinthians 5:7 “Purge out the old yeast, that you may be a new lump, even as you are unleavened. For indeed Christ, our Passover, has been sacrificed in our place.”
Christ, our Passover Lamb, was sacrificed for us. Passover was a prophecy of what Jesus would do for us, and accepting the sacrifice of Jesus and His pure, sinless blood- as replacement for our sinful flesh and blood.

Acts 2:30-31 “Therefore, being a prophet, and knowing that God had sworn with an oath to him that of the fruit of his body, according to the flesh, he would raise up the Christ to sit on his throne, (31) he foreseeing this spoke about the resurrection of the Christ, that his soul wasn’t left in Hades/Hell/Grave, and his flesh didn’t see decay.”
1 Peter 3:18-19 “Because Christ also suffered for sins once, the righteous for the unrighteous, that he might bring you to God; being put to death in the flesh, but made alive in the spirit; (19) in which he also went and preached to the spirits in prison,”

The Purpose
- Passover
Exodus 11:7 “So Pharaoh would know how the Lord does place a difference between the Egyptians and Israel.”
- Jesus
Titus 2:13-14 “looking for the blessed hope, and the appearance of the glory of our great God and Savior Jesus Christ, (14) who gave Himself for us that He might redeem us from all iniquity and purify to Himself a special people, zealous of good works.”
1 Peter 2:9 “But you are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for possession, so that you might speak of the praises of Him who has called you out of darkness into His marvelous light;”
Lord’s Supper
Lord’s Supper
Please Note: The Institution Of The Lord’s Supper Was Started On Passover. Having Studied What We Did Above, The Reason Is Obvious.
Date & Location
Matthew 26:17-19 “Now on the first day of unleavened bread, the disciples came to Jesus, saying to him, “Where do you want us to prepare for you to eat the Passover?” (18) He said, “Go into the city to a certain person, and tell him, ‘The Teacher says, “My time is at hand. I will keep the Passover at your house with my disciples.”’” (19) The disciples did as Jesus commanded them, and they prepared the Passover.”
A Couple Verses Later…
Matthew 26:26-29 “As they were eating, Jesus took bread, gave thanks for it, and broke it. He gave to the disciples, and said, “Take, eat; this is my body.” (27) He took the cup, gave thanks, and gave to them, saying, “All of you drink it, (28) for this is my blood of the new covenant, which is poured out for many for the remission of sins. (29) But I tell you that I will not drink of this fruit of the vine from now on, until that day when I drink it anew with you in my Father’s Kingdom.”
So, we know that Jesus is the Passover Lamb that takes away our sins. We also know that in John 6:53 we are told: “Then Jesus says to them, Truly, truly, I say to you, Unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man, and drink His blood, you do not have life in yourselves.” Now, we must partake in the Lord’s Supper to have the life of Christ within us. Without it, we will receive death and hell. But there is yet another reason why we celebrate the Lord’s Supper. Let’s read 1 Corinthians 11:26 “For as often as you eat this bread and drink this cup, you proclaim the Lord’s death until he comes.” Now we can see the two-fold reason why participating in the Lord’s Supper is so important. To have the life our Lord purchased for us with His own blood, and to remember that sacrifice.

Lord’s Supper
Be In Unity Within The Body Of Faith
1 Corinthians 11:18-19 “For first of all, when you come together in the assembly, I hear that divisions exist among you, and I partly believe it. (19) For there also must be factions among you, that those who are approved may be revealed among you.”
1 Corinthians 10:16-17 “Is not the cup of blessing that we bless a sharing in the blood of Christ? Is not the bread that we break a sharing in the body of Christ? (17) Because there is one bread, we who are many are one body, for we all share the one bread.”
Know The Difference From A Regular Meal And The Lord’s Supper
1 Corinthians 11:20 “Now when you come together at the same place, you are not really eating the Lord’s Supper.”
Don’t Get Drunk, Nor Eat It Just Because Your Hungry
1 Corinthians 11:21-22 “For when it is time to eat, everyone proceeds with his own supper. One is hungry and another becomes drunk. (22) Do you not have houses so that you can eat and drink? Or are you trying to show contempt for the church of God by shaming those who have nothing? What should I say to you? Should I praise you? I will not praise you for this!”
1 Corinthians 11:34 “If anyone is hungry, let him eat at home, so that when you assemble it does not lead to judgment. I will give directions about other matters when I come.”
Remember That You Are Proclaiming The Death Of Jesus For Your Sins
1 Corinthians 11:26 “For every time you eat this bread and drink the cup, you proclaim the Lord’s death until he comes.”
Don’t Eat In An Unworthy Manner, But Keep It Holy
1 Corinthians 11:27-28 “For this reason, whoever eats the bread or drinks the cup of the Lord in an unworthy manner will be guilty of the body and blood of the Lord. (28) A person should examine himself first, and in this way let him eat the bread and drink of the cup.”
1 Corinthians 10:21-22 “You cannot drink the cup of the Lord and the cup of demons. You cannot take part in the table of the Lord and the table of demons. (22) Or are we trying to provoke the Lord to jealousy? Are we really stronger than he is?”
Eating In An Unworthy Manner Will Bring Judgment Upon You
1 Corinthians 11:29-32 “For the one who eats and drinks without careful regard for the body eats and drinks judgment against himself. (30) That is why many of you are weak and sick, and quite a few are dead. (31) But if we examined ourselves, we would not be judged. (32) But when we are judged by the Lord, we are disciplined so that we may not be condemned with the world.”
Perform The Lord’s Supper In An Orderly Manner
1 Corinthians 11:33 “So then, my brothers and sisters, when you come together to eat, wait for one another.”
Lord’s Supper
Lord’s Supper
As we read in 1 Corinthians 11:27-28 “For this reason, whoever eats the bread or drinks the cup of the Lord in an unworthy manner will be guilty of the body and blood of the Lord.” Then we learned that for this reason many are sick and dead in 1 Corinthians 11:29-32 “For the one who eats and drinks without careful regard for the body eats and drinks judgment against himself. (30) That is why many of you are weak and sick, and quite a few are dead.” With this understanding we can truly appreciate the foot washing ceremony Jesus performed at the Lords Super during Passover.
Setting the Scene:
John 13:4-7 “He rose up from supper and laid aside His garments. And He took a towel and girded Himself. (5) After that He poured water into a basin and began to wash the disciples’ feet, and to wipe them with the towel with which He was girded. (6) Then He came to Simon Peter. And Peter said to Him, Lord, do You wash my feet? (7) Jesus answered and said to him, You do not know what I do now, but you shall know hereafter.”
Recap of what we just learned about the Lords Supper:
John 6:53 “Then Jesus says to them, Truly, truly, I say to you, Unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man, and drink His blood, you do not have life in yourselves.”
Jesus now makes another profound statement concerning the foot washing:
John 13:8 “Peter said to Him, You shall never wash my feet. Jesus answered him, Unless I wash you, you have no part with Me.”
We see here the profound importance of being washed by Jesus. We know this starts with Baptism. But, it does not end there.
Now Jesus explains the intent of the act:
John 13:9-10 “Simon Peter said to him, “Lord, not my feet only, but also my hands and my head!” (10) Jesus said to him, “Someone who has bathed only needs to have his feet washed, but is completely clean. You are clean, but not all of you.”
Peter was already clean, yet like we all do, he picked up spiritual dirt upon his feet. We are being taught that foot washing is a mini baptism. It is meant to clean us of the daily junk of life. We are baptized into the death and resurrection of Jesus as stated in the book of Romans.
Romans 6:3-4 “Or don’t you know that all we who were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? (4) We were buried therefore with him through baptism into death, that just as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, so we also might walk in newness of life.”
Yet, there is a buildup of spiritual impurity in our lives that can and must be washed away. We are told by Jesus to wash each other’s feet, just like He told us to baptize each other. This will accomplish the task.
- Baptize Them
Matthew 28:18-20 “Jesus came to them and spoke to them, saying, “All authority has been given to me in heaven and on earth. (19) Go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, (20) teaching them to observe all things that I commanded you. Behold, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.” Amen.
- Wash Their Feet
John 13:12-15 “So when he had washed their feet, put his outer garment back on, and sat down again, he said to them, “Do you know what I have done to you? (13) You call me, ‘Teacher’ and ‘Lord.’ You say so correctly, for so I am. (14) If I then, the Lord and the Teacher, have washed your feet, you also ought to wash one another’s feet. (15) For I have given you an example, that you also should do as I have done to you.”
Now we know why foot washing is so important before we take the Lord’s Supper. It washes away the buildup of impurity that life brings- preparing our hearts, spirits, and souls to take the Lord’s Supper in a worthy manner.

Note: Some Bless the Bread and Wine before the ceremony, and some during the ceremony. Others will do each individually right before consumption. Our family will do it before the service. Do as the Lord leads you. Refer to the bread recipe at the bottom of this study for more information on Blessing and Deposal of the Holy Instruments. Also, this is just a suggested guideline to get you started.
- Things To Think About
1) Our relationship with God- are we holding back sin? Have we submitted our lives completely to His will?
2) Our relationship with other members of the church. Do we harbor unforgiveness or do we need to go and ask for forgiveness?
3) Spiritual Liberty and the Work of Christ.
Read The Following Out Loud:
- Let Us Get Right With God
2 Corinthians 13:5 “Put yourselves to the test to see if you are in the faith; examine yourselves! Or do you not recognize regarding yourselves that Jesus Christ is in you – unless, indeed, you fail the test!”
Let us take a moment and examine our hearts before God. Ask for forgiveness, submit yourselves to His will, and love Him with your whole heart.
- Let Us Get Right With People
Matthew 5:21-24 “You have heard that it was said to an older generation, ‘Do not murder,’ and ‘whoever murders will be subjected to judgment.’ (22) But I say to you that anyone who is angry with a brother will be subjected to judgment. And whoever insults a brother will be brought before the council, and whoever says ‘Fool’ will be sent to fiery hell. (23) So then, if you bring your gift to the altar and there you remember that your brother has something against you, (24) leave your gift there in front of the altar. First go and be reconciled to your brother and then come and present your gift.”
Let us take a moment and ask God to reveal who we must restore broken relationships with. Let us seek and offer forgiveness freely, as we have freely been given forgiveness. For as much as it pertains to us, let us pursue peace with those who will receive it.
If you do not feel at peace with God and your fellow man, you are forbidden to take the Lord’s Supper. Please refrain until restoration can be made between you and God and the people in your life.
- Let Us Now Begin The Lord’s Supper:
1 Peter 1:18-22 “knowing that you were redeemed, not with corruptible things, with silver or gold, from the useless way of life handed down from your fathers, (19) but with precious blood, as of a lamb without blemish or spot, the blood of Christ; (20) who was foreknown indeed before the foundation of the world, but was revealed in this last age for your sake, (21) who through him are believers in God, who raised him from the dead, and gave him glory; so that your faith and hope might be in God. (22) Seeing you have purified your souls in your obedience to the truth through the Spirit in sincere brotherly affection, love one another from the heart fervently:”
- Take The Bread Prepared To Eat. Then Read The Following:
1 Corinthians 11:23-24 “For I received from the Lord that which also I delivered to you, that the Lord Jesus on the night in which he was betrayed took bread. (24) When he had given thanks, he broke it, and said, “Take, eat. This is my body, which is broken for you. Do this in memory of me.”
- Take and eat the Lord’s Body. Remain silent for a time for reflection.
Take The Juice Prepared To Drink. Then Read The Following:
1 Corinthians 11:25 “In the same way he also took the cup, after supper, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in my blood. Do this, as often as you drink, in memory of me.”
Take and drink the Lord’s Blood. Remain silent for a time of reflection.
Closing Remarks And Scripture Reading:
Psalm 111:2-3+9 “The works of the LORD are great, studied by all who take pleasure in them. His work is honorable and glorious, and His righteousness endures forever. . . . He has sent redemption to His people; He has commanded His covenant forever; holy and awesome is His name.”

- Who Can Perform The Lord’s Supper?
Here is some helpful text on why this is everybody’s right and privilege: You can do this yourself. The main guideline I would suggest is that the most spiritually mature and advanced member lead out in the service, and a male before a female. Meaning men have the responsibility of being the spiritual covering within the Body of Christ. So, if and when available, the most mature male in good standing should always lead out. If there is no one, then the most mature female in good standing should lead out.
Lord’s Supper
We are now the new temple of God.
1 Corinthians 3:16 “Do you not know that you are God’s temple and that God’s Spirit lives in you?”
We are also the new royal Priesthood.
1 Peter 2:9-10 “But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for God’s own possession, that you may proclaim the excellence of him who called you out of darkness into his marvelous light: (10) who in time past were no people, but now are God’s people, who had not obtained mercy, but now have obtained mercy.”
Lord’s Supper
- How Often Can You Perform The Lord’s Supper?
We are told as often as we do it. So, as many times that we are led by God, we can perform the Lord’s Supper.
1 Corinthians 11:25-26 “In the same way he also took the cup, after supper, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in my blood. Do this, as often as you drink, in memory of me.” (26) For as often as you eat this bread and drink this cup, you proclaim the Lord’s death until he comes.”
I would suggest though, don’t do it so often as to make it common to the heart and mind. There is a danger of doing things for the sake of habit and it losing all its deeper meaning.
Lord’s Supper
- Where Can The Lord’s Supper Be Given?
Location of the Modern New Testament Church
Remember that many Jews did not believe Jesus to be the long-awaited Messiah, so it is prudent to realize that Christians of the New Testament, Jew and Gentile, could not hold Christian Church in the Temple. So, as we see in many references, the church was within the home of the believers.
Philemon 1:2 “To Apphia our sister, to Archippus our fellow soldier, and to the church that meets in your house.”
See Also: Romans 16:5 + Colossians 4:15 + 1 Corinthians 16:19 + Acts 2:2 + Acts 5:42
We also know that where two or more are gathered together in the Lord’s Name, Jesus is in the midst of them. Therefore, we have the making of a church service. It does not have to be in a designated building or place. Where there is faith in Jesus, the location is adequate enough for the exercise.
Matthew 18:20 “For where two or three are gathered together in My name, there I am in their midst.”
Lord’s Supper
- Does It Have To Be Unleavened Bread And Grape Juice?
For when you don’t have the normal supplies to perform the Lord’s Supper, I would without fear use whatever I had on hand to perform this sacred obligation. Many such poor people around the world may only have water and crackers. Yet, I believe through prayer and faith these instruments of opportunity will perform the needed function through our obedience to the call of God.
Pray Over What You Have In Faith
1 Timothy 4:4-5 “For every creature of God is good, and nothing is to be rejected, if it is received with thanksgiving. (5) For it is sanctified through the word of God and prayer.”
We Find Such An Exception Given To Us By Jesus
Mark 2:25-26 “He said to them, “Did you never read what David did, when he had need, and was hungry—he, and those who were with him? (26) How he entered into God’s house at the time of Abiathar the high priest, and ate the show bread, which is not lawful to eat except for the priests, and gave also to those who were with him?”
If I had what was called for or could attain such things, I would always put in the effort to do so. I believe we are required to do so. Yet, if I did not or could not, I would fearlessly utilize what I had on hand.
We find more encouragement to this fact in the following verse:
Matthew 9:27-29 “As Jesus passed by from there, two blind men followed him, calling out and saying, “Have mercy on us, son of David!” (28) When he had come into the house, the blind men came to him. Jesus said to them, “Do you believe that I am able to do this?” They told him, “Yes, Lord.” (29) Then he touched their eyes, saying, “According to your faith be it done to you.”
1 Corinthians 6:12 “All things are lawful for me,” but not all things are expedient. “All things are lawful for me,” but I will not be brought under the power of anything.
Galatians 5:18 “But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under the law.”
1 Corinthians 10:31 “So whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do everything for the glory of God.”
Lord’s Supper
Lord’s Supper
Wine
We use Grape Juice. We try to get 100% Grape Juice, if available.
Unleavened Bread
¼ Cup Oil
¼ Cup Water
1 Cup 100% Flour (NOT self-rising flour, as it has leavening agents already in it.)
If you prefer you can adjust the amounts differently than written to get desired outcome.
Mix ingredients together:
Don’t over mix/knead the dough as gluten chains will form and make the dough harder. Mix just enough that it become kind of like cookie dough.
Cooking.
We pan fry the bread with oil. Making little balls and then flattening them out like tortilla shapes. Each one being 1 serving size per person. We will talk in a minute why we do this. Or, you can make a bigger one and break it apart.
You can also cook them in the oven as a tortilla at 350 degrees for about 10 minutes, until golden brown, or until desired finish.
The Blessing.
We take the little pieces we made and the grape juice already poured in the cups for as many participants partaking. Note: This is why we make single serving size pieces. The participant can crack and break the bread of their own piece. And, we can also insure that only the bread being used will receive the Prayer of Dedication for the service. This is the same reason we pre-pour the juice.
We then say a rayer dedication the bread and juice to spiritually represent the Blood of Jesus. At this point, it has become holy and sacred and must be treated as such.
Properly Discarding Of What Is Left Over.
If you don’t pre portion your serving sizes, you must discard the rest in the most respectful fashion as possible. Some will take what is left over and burn the bread. Then, perform a drink offering to God by pouring the juice onto the ground. See Exodus 29:36-41 + Genesis 35:14 Needless to say, the Bread and Juice should never find its way into your trash or down your sewage pipes.
What about the leftover dough that is not dedicated?
Well, we make the rest of the dough that was not dedicated into a delicious treat. We pan fry the dough as before, then while it’s still hot, we cover them in butter and salt.
Lord’s Supper
As you can see, we have covered Passover and Jesus being our Passover Lamb. And how we unlocked the new Passover through the Lord’s Supper. In doing so, we can have life within ourselves through Jesus. Then, we covered how important foot washing really is to have a part with Jesus in His Kingdom. We have also covered the grave warning of making sure our conscience is clean before God and man, so we do not become responsible for the death of Jesus. And ending with many other guidelines for the successful execution of the Lord’s Supper.
