When Jesus wept

Jesus Wept

Jesus Wept: It’s easy to get this “super hero” mentality about Jesus. That He never had anything that wore Him down, or that tested His resolves. That He never got sore after a hard day’s work, or worked Himself silly into exhaustion. That He never had to make a choice that had no winning answer in life. That He never got ill. That all things came easy to Him, that He never had an “off” day (not to imply sin, yet that it just wasn’t as easy as it could have been.) It can be easy to see Jesus as detached and separated from the plight and suffering of what it is to be human, after the fall of Adam. Yet, this is not correct. Everything, in every way, Jesus has known the human experience.

Jesus Wept

Focus Verse:

Hebrews 4:14-15 “Having then a great high priest, who has passed through the heavens, Jesus, the Son of God, let’s hold tightly to our confession.  (15)  For we don’t have a high priest who can’t be touched with the feeling of our infirmities, but one who has been in all points tempted like we are, yet without sin.”

Jesus Wept

Hebrews 2:16-18 “So Jesus helps Abraham’s descendants rather than helping angels.  (17)  Therefore, he had to become like his brothers and sisters so that he could be merciful. He became like them so that he could serve as a faithful chief priest in God’s presence and make peace with God for their sins.  (18)  Because Jesus experienced temptation when he suffered, he is able to help others when they are tempted.

Isaiah 53:2-12 “For he grew up before him as a tender plant, and as a root out of dry ground. He has no good looks or majesty. When we see him, there is no beauty that we should desire him.  (3)  He was despised, and rejected by men; a man of suffering, and acquainted with disease. He was despised as one from whom men hide their face; and we didn’t respect him.  (4)  Surely he has borne our sickness, and carried our suffering; yet we considered him plagued, struck by God, and afflicted.  (5)  But he was pierced for our transgressions. He was crushed for our iniquities. The punishment that brought our peace was on him; and by his wounds we are healed.  (6)  All we like sheep have gone astray. Everyone has turned to his own way; and Yahweh has laid on him the iniquity of us all.  (7)  He was oppressed, yet when he was afflicted he didn’t open his mouth. As a lamb that is led to the slaughter, and as a sheep that before its shearers is silent, so he didn’t open his mouth.  (8)  He was taken away by oppression and judgment; and as for his generation, who considered that he was cut off out of the land of the living and stricken for the disobedience of my people?  (9)  They made his grave with the wicked, and with a rich man in his death; although he had done no violence, nor was any deceit in his mouth.  (10)  Yet it pleased Yahweh to bruise him. He has caused him to suffer. When you make his soul an offering for sin, he will see his offspring. He will prolong his days, and Yahweh’s pleasure will prosper in his hand.  (11)  After the suffering of his soul, he will see the light and be satisfied. My righteous servant will justify many by the knowledge of himself; and he will bear their iniquities.  (12)  Therefore I will give him a portion with the great, and he will divide the plunder with the strong; because he poured out his soul to death, and was counted with the transgressors; yet he bore the sins of many, and made intercession for the transgressors.”

Yet, in all of this, Jesus never sinned and was perfect in every way. Even after being tempted in every way humanity could be tempted.

1 Peter 2:22 “Christ never committed any sin. He never spoke deceitfully.”

Unlike The Rest Of Humanity…

Romans 3:23 “Because all people have sinned, they have fallen short of God’s glory.”

~The Tears Of Jesus~

> Lazarus <

Back Story For John 11: Jesus was in Bethany when He found out that His good friend Lazarus was sick and about to die. He purposely delayed His trip to save him, so he would die. This way He could resurrect Him. In doing so, it would increase the disciple’s faith in Him, giving God glory, and glory to Himself. He arrived after Lazarus was in the grave for 4 days.

John 11:32-36 “Now when Mary came to the place where Jesus was and saw him, she fell at his feet and said to him, “Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died.”  (33)  When Jesus saw her weeping, and the people who had come with her weeping, he was intensely moved in spirit and greatly distressed.  (34)  He asked, “Where have you laid him?” They replied, “Lord, come and see.”  (35)  Jesus wept.  (36)  Thus the people who had come to mourn said, “Look how much he loved him!”

John 11:38-43 “Jesus, intensely moved again, came to the tomb. (Now it was a cave, and a stone was placed across it.)  (39)  Jesus said, “Take away the stone.” Martha, the sister of the deceased, replied, “Lord, by this time the body will have a bad smell, because he has been buried four days.”  (40)  Jesus responded, “Didn’t I tell you that if you believe, you would see the glory of God?”  (41)  So they took away the stone. Jesus looked upward and said, “Father, I thank you that you have listened to me.  (42) I knew that you always listen to me, but I said this for the sake of the crowd standing around here, that they may believe that you sent me.”  (43)  When he had said this, he shouted in a loud voice, “Lazarus, come out!”

> Cries Over Jerusalem <

Matthew 23:37-39Jerusalem, Jerusalem, you kill the prophets and stone to death those sent to you! How often I wanted to gather your children together the way a hen gathers her chicks under her wings! But you were not willing!  (38)  Your house will be abandoned, deserted.  (39) I can guarantee that you will not see me again until you say, ‘Blessed is the one who comes in the name of the Lord!'”

Luke 19:41-44 “When he came closer and saw the city, he began to cry.  (42)  He said, “If you had only known today what would bring you peace! But now it is hidden, so you cannot see it.  (43)  The time will come when enemy armies will build a wall to surround you and close you in on every side.  (44)  They will level you to the ground and kill your people. One stone will not be left on top of another, because you didn’t recognize the time when God came to help you.” (Note: Verses 45-48, Jesus then clears the temple with those same tears in His eyes.)

Jesus was again foretelling the destruction of Jerusalem, as can also be found in Matthew 24:15-28

> Passionate Prayers <

Hebrews 5:7-9 “During his life on earth, Jesus prayed to God, who could save him from death. He prayed and pleaded with loud crying and tears, and he was heard because of his devotion to God.  (8)  Although Jesus was the Son of God, he learned to be obedient through his sufferings.  (9)  After he had finished his work, he became the source of eternal salvation for everyone who obeys him.”

Here Is An Example Of One Such Amazing Prayer:

John 17:1-26 “After saying this, Jesus looked up to heaven and said, “Father, the time is here. Give your Son glory so that your Son can give you glory.  (2)  After all, you’ve given him authority over all humanity so that he can give eternal life to all those you gave to him.  (3)  This is eternal life: to know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom you sent.  (4)  On earth I have given you glory by finishing the work you gave me to do.  (5)  Now, Father, give me glory in your presence with the glory I had with you before the world existed.  (6)  “I made your name known to the people you gave me. They are from this world. They belonged to you, and you gave them to me. They did what you told them.  (7)  Now they know that everything you gave me comes from you,  (8)  because I gave them the message that you gave me. They have accepted this message, and they know for sure that I came from you. They have believed that you sent me.  (9)  “I pray for them. I’m not praying for the world but for those you gave me, because they are yours.  (10)  Everything I have is yours, and everything you have is mine. I have been given glory by the people you have given me.  (11)  I won’t be in the world much longer, but they are in the world, and I’m coming back to you. Holy Father, keep them safe by the power of your name, the name that you gave me, so that their unity may be like ours.  (12)  While I was with them, I kept them safe by the power of your name, the name that you gave me. I watched over them, and none of them, except one person, became lost. So Scripture came true.  (13)  “But now, Father, I’m coming back to you. I say these things while I’m still in the world so that they will have the same joy that I have.  (14)  I have given them your message. But the world has hated them because they don’t belong to the world any more than I belong to the world.  (15)  I’m not asking you to take them out of the world but to protect them from the evil one.  (16)  They don’t belong to the world any more than I belong to the world.  (17)  “Use the truth to make them holy. Your words are truth.  (18)  I have sent them into the world the same way you sent me into the world.  (19)  I’m dedicating myself to this holy work I’m doing for them so that they, too, will use the truth to be holy. (20)  “I’m not praying only for them. I’m also praying for those who will believe in me through their message(21)  I pray that all of these people continue to have unity in the way that you, Father, are in me and I am in you. I pray that they may be united with us so that the world will believe that you have sent me.  (22)  I have given them the glory that you gave me. I did this so that they are united in the same way we are.  (23)  I am in them, and you are in me. So they are completely united. In this way the world knows that you have sent me and that you have loved them in the same way you have loved me.  (24)  “Father, I want those you have given to me to be with me, to be where I am. I want them to see my glory, which you gave me because you loved me before the world was made.  (25)  Righteous Father, the world didn’t know you. Yet, I knew you, and these disciples have known that you sent me.  (26) I have made your name known to them, and I will make it known so that the love you have for me will be in them and I will be in them.”

> The Garden <

Matthew 26:36-46 “Then Jesus went with the disciples to a place called Gethsemane. He said to them, “Stay here while I go over there and pray.”  (37)  He took Peter and Zebedee’s two sons with him. He was beginning to feel deep anguish.  (38)  Then he said to them, “My anguish is so great that I feel as if I’m dying. Wait here, and stay awake with me.”  (39)  After walking a little farther, he quickly bowed with his face to the ground and prayed, “Father, if it’s possible, let this cup of suffering be taken away from me. But let your will be done rather than mine.”  (40)  When he went back to the disciples, he found them asleep. He said to Peter, “Couldn’t you stay awake with me for one hour?  (41)  Stay awake, and pray that you won’t be tempted. You want to do what’s right, but you’re weak.”  (42)  Then he went away a second time and prayed, “Father, if this cup cannot be taken away unless I drink it, let your will be done.”  (43)  He found them asleep again because they couldn’t keep their eyes open.  (44)  After leaving them again, he went away and prayed the same prayer a third time.  (45)  Then he came back to the disciples and said to them, “You might as well sleep now. The time is near for the Son of Man to be handed over to sinners.  (46)  Get up! Let’s go! The one who is betraying me is near.”

I believe He was very upset about being separated from God. Let’s take a look at my book, “We Shall Be Like Him”, and explore this further:

~Day 6: Tree of life

“The fall of man begins in the Garden of Eden as found in Genesis 3. The next garden we will look at is the Garden of Gethsemane found in Matthew 26:36-57. In this garden, Jesus spends the final moments with His Abba Father before His suffering was about to begin. Let us read in the book of Luke: “And being in an agony he prayed more earnestly: and his sweat was as it were great drops of blood falling down to the ground.” (Luke 22:44) The Garden of Eden became a garden of Sin. The Garden of Gethsemane now becomes a garden of obedience. Through much anguish, Jesus conquers His own desires and submits to the Father’s will. Instead of being forced out of the Garden like Adam and Eve, Jesus willingly goes on His own free will. When Adam and Eve leave the garden, they enter a world to tell the tale of their failure. Jesus leaves the garden and gives hope of returning once more…..” “Once and for all, this most sacred work is completed. Now the way back to paradise is set. This was also partly accomplished in a Garden. Eden became a Garden of Sin leading to death. The Garden tomb where Jesus laid lifeless, was also a garden of death. Then, through the power of God, the Garden became a garden of resurrection and life. I am convinced the spiritual significance is foreshadowing the renewal of the Paradise of God and Man once more.”

~Day33: Drink His Cup Part 1

“The second sacrifice is found in the garden. In the Psalms 16 prophecy, we read a most interesting line that ties the garden, cross, and the grave together. Let’s read: “The LORD [YHWH] is the portion of mine inheritance and of my cup: thou maintainest my lot.” (Psalm 16:5) Jesus is faced with two cups. The cup of sinners as found in this verse, “Upon the wicked he shall rain snares, fire and brimstone, and a horrible tempest: this shall be the portion of their cup.” (Psalm 11:6) The other cup is the cup of salvation and blessing. “I will take the cup of salvation, and call upon the name of the LORD.” (Psalm 116:13) Jesus was placed in the most amazing and heart wrenching position. It was a position that no man has ever been before. Jesus passed the temptations of Satan with flying colors. All He desired was God and to be obedient to Him. This was His portion and all He longed for. Satan couldn’t offer anything Jesus wanted more. Now in the Garden, Jesus must make the sacrifice of self. In order for Jesus to be obedient to God, He now must become sin and be separated from God, His Daddy for the first time. I believe this is why Jesus cried out in the garden, why He begged for another way. It was the separation that cut straight to His soul. Eve’s temptation by Satan was to become like her greatest desire: God, “For God doth know that in the day ye eat thereof, then your eyes shall be opened, and ye shall be as gods, knowing good and evil.” (Gen 3:5) Eve disobeyed by following that desire to its dreadful end. Jesus now longs to be in the presence of His greatest desire: His Father. Yet, to be obedient He must leave the presence of the Father. It was obedience through separation that stirred Jesus’ heart so badly. God sacrificed His Son; Jesus sacrificed His desire to be in His Father’s presence. Each side had something at stake. Jesus must take the 2nd cup of fire and burning sulfur. He must leave the presence of God to become sin for us. In doing so, He receives the cup of salvation for humanity. He also receives the Psalms 16 cup of inheritance, for Himself and all who call upon His name. Yes, there were two sacrifices made for us on that day: Jesus sacrificing His will and God sacrificing His Son.”

> At His Death <

Mark 15:33-39 “At noon darkness came over the whole land until three in the afternoon.  (34)  At three o’clock Jesus cried out in a loud voice, “Eloi, Eloi, lema sabachthani?” which means, “My God, my God, why have you abandoned me?”  (35)  When some of the people standing there heard him say that, they said, “Listen! He’s calling Elijah.”  (36)  Someone ran and soaked a sponge in vinegar. Then he put it on a stick and offered Jesus a drink. The man said, “Let’s see if Elijah comes to take him down.”  (37)  Then Jesus cried out in a loud voice and died.  (38)  The curtain in the temple was split in two from top to bottom.  (39)  When the officer who stood facing Jesus saw how he gave up his spirit, he said, “Certainly, this man was the Son of God!”

> God’s Strange Act Of Judgmental Destruction <

Isaiah 63:7-10  “I will tell of the loving kindnesses of Yahweh and the praises of Yahweh, according to all that Yahweh has given to us, and the great goodness toward the house of Israel, which he has given to them according to his mercies, and according to the multitude of his loving kindnesses.  (8)  For he said, “Surely, they are my people, children who will not deal falsely;” so he became their Savior.  (9)  In all their affliction he was afflicted, and the angel of his presence saved them. In his love and in his pity he redeemed them. He bore them, and carried them all the days of old.  (10)  But they rebelled, and grieved his holy Spirit. Therefore he turned and became their enemy, and he himself fought against them.”

Judgment To Come

Revelation 6:12-17  “Then I looked when the Lamb opened the sixth seal, and a huge earthquake took place; the sun became as black as sackcloth made of hair, and the full moon became blood red;  (13)  and the stars in the sky fell to the earth like a fig tree dropping its unripe figs when shaken by a fierce wind.  (14)  The sky was split apart like a scroll being rolled up, and every mountain and island was moved from its place.  (15)  Then the kings of the earth, the very important people, the generals, the rich, the powerful, and everyone, slave and free, hid themselves in the caves and among the rocks of the mountains.  (16)  They said to the mountains and to the rocks, “Fall on us and hide us from the face of the one who is seated on the throne and from the wrath of the Lamb,  (17)  because the great day of their wrath has come, and who is able to withstand it?”

Then Silence In Heaven For 30 Minutes

Revelation 8:1-5 “Now when the Lamb opened the seventh seal there was silence in heaven for about half an hour.  (2)  Then I saw the seven angels who stand before God, and seven trumpets were given to them.  (3)  Another angel holding a golden censer came and was stationed at the altar. A large amount of incense was given to him to offer up, with the prayers of all the saints, on the golden altar that is before the throne.  (4)  The smoke coming from the incense, along with the prayers of the saints, ascended before God from the angel’s hand.  (5) Then the angel took the censer, filled it with fire from the altar, and threw it on the earth, and there were crashes of thunder, roaring, flashes of lightning, and an earthquake.”

2 Peter 3:7 “But the heavens that now exist, and the earth, by the same word have been stored up for fire, being reserved against the day of judgment and destruction of ungodly men.”

Jesus, Judgment, and God’s Strange Act!

The dual prophecy against Ephraim and Jerusalem & the World

Isaiah 28:14-29 “Therefore, listen to the LORD’s message, you who mock, you rulers of these people who reside in Jerusalem!  (15)  For you say, “We have made a treaty with death, with Sheol we have made an agreement. When the overwhelming judgment sweeps by it will not reach us. For we have made a lie our refuge, we have hidden ourselves in a deceitful word.”  (16)  Therefore, this is what the Sovereign LORD, says: Look, I am laying a stone in Zion, an approved stone, set in place as a precious cornerstone for the foundation. The one who maintains his faith will not panic.  (17)  I will make justice the measuring line, fairness the plumb line; hail will sweep away the unreliable refuge, the floodwaters will overwhelm the hiding place.  (18)  Your treaty with death will be dissolved; your agreement with Sheol will not last. When the overwhelming judgment sweeps by, you will be overrun by it.  (19) Whenever it sweeps by, it will overtake you; indeed, every morning it will sweep by, it will come through during the day and the night.” When this announcement is understood, it will cause nothing but terror.  (20)  For the bed is too short to stretch out on, and the blanket is too narrow to wrap around oneself.  (21)  For the LORD will rise up, as he did at Mount Perazim, he will rouse himself, as he did in the Valley of Gibeon, to accomplish his work, his peculiar work, to perform his task, his strange task.  (22)  So now, do not mock, or your chains will become heavier! For I have heard a message about decreed destruction, from the Sovereign LORD of Heaven’s Armies, against the entire land.  (23)  Pay attention and listen to my message! Be attentive and listen to what I have to say!  (24)  Does a farmer just keep on plowing at planting time? Does he keep breaking up and harrowing his ground?  (25)  Once he has leveled its surface, does he not scatter the seed of the caraway plant, sow the seed of the cumin plant, and plant the wheat, barley, and grain in their designated places?  (26)  His God instructs him; he teaches him the principles of agriculture.  (27)  Certainly caraway seed is not threshed with a sledge, nor is the wheel of a cart rolled over cumin seed. Certainly caraway seed is beaten with a stick, and cumin seed with a flail.  (28)  Grain is crushed, though one certainly does not thresh it forever. The wheel of one’s wagon rolls over it, but his horses do not crush it.  (29) This also comes from the LORD of Heaven’s Armies, who gives supernatural guidance and imparts great wisdom.”

> All Tears Wiped Away Forever <

Revelation 21:1-7 “I saw a new heaven and a new earth. The first heaven and the first earth had disappeared, and so had the sea.  (2)  Then I saw New Jerusalem, that holy city, coming down from God in heaven. It was like a bride dressed in her wedding gown and ready to meet her husband.  (3)  I heard a loud voice shout from the throne: God’s home is now with his people. He will live with them, and they will be his own. Yes, God will make his home among his people.  (4)  He will wipe all tears from their eyes, and there will be no more death, suffering, crying, or pain. These things of the past are gone forever.  (5)  Then the one sitting on the throne said: I am making everything new. Write down what I have said. My words are true and can be trusted.  (6)  Everything is finished! I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end. I will freely give water from the life-giving fountain to everyone who is thirsty.  (7)  All who win the victory will be given these blessings. I will be their God, and they will be my people.”

Revelation 7:9-17 “After these things I saw a large crowd from every nation, tribe, people, and language. No one was able to count how many people there were. They were standing in front of the throne and the lamb. They were wearing white robes, holding palm branches in their hands, (10) and crying out in a loud voice, “Salvation belongs to our God, who sits on the throne, and to the lamb!”  (11)  All the angels stood around the throne with the leaders and the four living creatures. They bowed in front of the throne with their faces touching the ground, worshiped God, (12) and said, “Amen! Praise, glory, wisdom, thanks, honor, power, and strength be to our God forever and ever! Amen!”  (13) One of the leaders asked me, “Who are these people wearing white robes, and where did they come from?”  (14)  I answered him, “Sir, you know.” Then he told me, “These are the people who are coming out of the terrible suffering. They have washed their robes and made them white in the blood of the lamb.  (15) That is why they are in front of the throne of God. They serve him day and night in his temple. The one who sits on the throne will spread his tent over them.  (16)  They will never be hungry or thirsty again. Neither the sun nor any burning heat will ever overcome them.  (17)  The lamb in the center near the throne will be their shepherd. He will lead them to springs filled with the water of life, and God will wipe every tear from their eyes.

~RECAP:

I believe what we have learned from this study, “When Jesus Wept”, is the following:

Jesus knows what it means to be human, being tempted in every single way as the rest of humanity. He is not untouched with the human condition. From being kind hearted, emotionally attached to His friends. He was passionate about His calling and the work He was sent to accomplish, even feeling the heartbreak and loss of knowing the destruction of His people. We have seen that Jesus poured His emotions into His prayers for Himself and true believers. Then, we viewed what He said the day He died upon the cross, separated from God for the very first time. Jesus was not a superhero, untouched by the human condition. He has walked the same path we all walk, with all of its highs and lows, pain and joys. Our Lord Jesus knows what it is like to be you!

We have seen the compassion of God along with Jesus as well. We have read in Isaiah that God suffered (we can rightly assume Jesus did also) when His people suffered. This strong emotional connection was God offering His heart, not just His divinity, to His children. When they grieved His Holy Spirit through disobedience and as the prophecy says, not having faith in the cornerstone (Jesus), God takes that passion and turns His fury against them. All those who reject Jesus will suffer this fate. This strange act makes God remain silent for 30 minutes in Heaven. Then, once the strange act of judgmental destruction is accomplished, God and Jesus will turn and wipe the tears from the eyes of His children, and might I suggest, from their very own eyes as well.
